Nicola Peltz Beckham is coming for the commenters. As the star gears up for the release of her new film, Lola, she’s sounding off about the criticism she’s faced from followers on social media.
“I get a lot of mean comments on my Instagram that, unfortunately, I do read, and they always comment, ‘She doesn’t work,'” the 29-year-old says in an interview for Byrdie‘s new digital issue, available now. “And that’s fair, and I don’t blame them for saying that because it’s not like I’m posting my Lola experience every step of the way. But I really have been working on Lola for six years. It’s such a massively long process.”
Nicola, who has been married to Brooklyn Beckham since 2022, has, in fact, worn numerous hats throughout the filmmaking process on Lola, serving as the writer, director and star.
“I really wanted to find a female director because I wanted that feminine touch and a woman’s perspective,” she reflects. “But then people were [suggesting] I should direct because I know the characters better than anyone else. I always wanted to direct, but never in a million years did I think I’d do it in something I wrote and acted in. I just jumped in and did it.”
Thankfully, Nicola has a solid support system behind her.
“Family is everything to me, and I mean that with my whole heart,” she tells the outlet. “I’m so close to mine and Brooklyn’s family and I think there’s no better feeling than knowing you have a strong support system. It’s such a blessing, and I never take it for granted.”
She’s particularly grateful to be able to lean on her mother-in-law, Victoria Beckham, for advice.
“I love her, and she’s such an incredible, successful woman,” she says of the former Spice Girl. “How lucky am I that I get to ask her for advice? I’m blessed!”
She also opened up about lending her support to best friend Selena Gomez, calling the pop star’s Rare Beauty brand “amazing and it’s my favorite thing in the world.”
The “Hands to Myself” songstress recently teamed up with Brooklyn to surprise Nicola with a fun birthday party that perfectly reflected her homebody personality.
“Brooklyn is such an explorer, and he makes fun of me, saying, ‘I could bring you anywhere, and you would love the hotel room,'” she shared. “Yes, 100 percent! He’s the person who says we have to go to this restaurant, while room service sounds great to me. But sometimes I have to go out. I can’t be so boring.”
So as she turned 29, the pals teamed up to throw a cozy bash in her honor.
“They know I love staying in and being in PJs, so they did a pajama party, which was so thoughtful,” she said.
In Lola, Nicola stars as a teen who works to protect her little brother from their dysfunctional reality. Starring alongside her is her real-life brother, Will Peltz, and actors Virginia Madsen, Trevor Long, Luke David Blumm, Raven Goodwin and Richie Merritt.
The film is out now.
“I’m feeling a lot of different things,” she admitted. “I’m honestly so excited for everyone to finally be able to see it. I wrote it when I was 23, and it’s been such a labor of love. I’ve put my heart and soul into it.”
