We just can’t escape it. An Arctic air mass continues to keep bitter cold locked over the Ozarks. Thankfully, this weekend brings a return to the cold without the winter weather chaos we experienced last weekend.
Our main goal tonight is to keep temperatures out of the negatives. That will be a challenge, as the metro area is currently forecast to drop to around 1 degree.
Wind chills are expected to range from -10 to -15 early Saturday morning, with very little improvement throughout the day. High temperatures will remain stuck in the 20s under mostly sunny skies, accompanied by breezy northerly winds.
Clouds will thicken on Sunday as a clipper system passes to our north. While it won’t amount to much, our northern and easternmost counties could see a light dusting or flurries during the day.
Sunday does bring a slight improvement, with temperatures peaking just a few degrees above the freezing mark.
Milder air returns for Groundhog Day, with highs climbing into the 40s, allowing for significant melting. I’ll go into more depth on that in a separate article, but for now, I expect Punxsutawney Phil to see his shadow and call for six more weeks of winter. The atmospheric setup will generally keep cold air invading the Ozarks through much of February and into early March.
