Berlin raid after pro-Palestinian rally leaves police officer injured

Generate Key Takeaways

Police and officials from Germany’s public prosecutor’s office have searched five apartments in Berlin two months after a police officer was attacked at a pro-Palestinian rally in the city.

The raids were directed against two suspects aged 28 and 29 and three witnesses, the authorities announced on Wednesday.

No arrests were made, but the approximately 60 officers seized several communication devices and other evidence that is said to prove that both suspects were at the scene at the time of the offence.

The authorities say one of the two, a 28-year-old man, is suspected of a serious breach of the peace. He is also accused of resisting law enforcement officers and attempting to release arrested prisoners.

A 29-year-old woman is suspected of resisting law enforcement officers in conjunction with attempting to free prisoners.

However, neither of them are suspected of directly attacking police officers, according to reports.

The 36-year-old police officer was seriously injured on May 15 during a rally marking Nakba Day and had to be taken to hospital.

The police said at the time that the officer was dragged into the crowd and “trampled.” He suffered a broken arm and injuries to his upper body. Police say at least 11 officers and an unknown number of protestors were injured.

According to police, around 1,100 people took part in the demonstration at its peak. Some of them protested aggressively against Israel and the war in Gaza and there violent clashes between demonstrators and the police.
