Dallas Students Transform Perspectives Via Study Abroad Scholarships

Ten students from Dallas’ Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School spent their summer studying across Europe, earning over $60,000 combined in scholarships through international exchange programs.

The young women traveled to Italy, Spain, and Portugal for four-week academic programs focusing on language, culture, and sustainability.

For many students, these Council on International Educational Exchange Global Navigator programs marked their first international travel without family. The experience challenged them to navigate unfamiliar environments while building independence and cultural understanding.

Esmeralda C. chose Rome for Italian Language and Culture studies.

“Spending four weeks in Italy gave me the opportunity to build a strong sense of community with the locals,” she said.

Daily interactions shaped her experience abroad.

“Hearing the daily ‘ciao’ at coffee shops, restaurants, and from neighbors, conversations with my host family at the dinner table, along with exploring the city, deepened my appreciation for the present moment.”

Ashley M. studied Honors Spanish Language and Culture in Madrid.

“Studying abroad in Madrid has been an exciting, eye-opening experience. Every day has felt like a mix of adventure, culture, and learning far beyond the classroom,” she said.

The programs blend traditional classroom instruction with real-world cultural immersion. Students strengthen communication skills while gaining confidence in international settings.

Esmeralda Martínez, who teaches Spanish and leadership at Rangel, champions the exchange opportunities.

“Seeing my students light up when they share their admission into one of CIEE’s study abroad programs makes my day,” she said.

Martínez believes the programs transform students beyond academics.

“Experiences like these allow students to view life in a more holistic way. It pushes them to put their phones down and take in the world,” she said.

The teacher emphasizes hands-on learning over digital consumption.

“To be open to the problems of the world through their own eyes, not a textbook or a social media post. They also embrace cultural competency as a valuable trait to have as a contributing member to society.”

Students return with broadened perspectives and deeper empathy, according to Martínez. The programs develop skills extending far beyond language proficiency.

Despite challenges in navigating new environments, Esmeralda C. cherished every moment abroad. She now encourages other students to pursue international study opportunities and experience cultural immersion firsthand.
