Jordan condemns renewed attacks on Gaza aid convoys

Jordan on Wednesday strongly condemned repeated attacks on humanitarian aid convoys en route to Gaza, following a new assault on a 30-truck convoy, the state-run Petra new agency said Wednesday.

It quoted Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani as saying that settlers blocked the road and pelted the trucks with stones, damaging four vehicles and forcing the convoy to halt for hours.

He noted it was the second such incident in less than a week, after a similar attack on Sunday forced two aid trucks to return to Jordan.

Momani criticized what he described “as Israel’s lax handling” of settler violence, calling on Israeli authorities to intervene seriously.

“The failure to stop these attacks is a violation of international law and agreements,” he said

The Israeli army, in response to an inquiry, stated that a gathering of Israeli civilians had formed at the Allenby border crossing with Jordan, located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Soldiers dispersed the trucks and the trucks were then escorted to their destination.

Momani highlighted growing logistical difficulties faced by the Jordan, including lengthy inspection delays, limited working hours at crossings, complex application procedures, and new customs fees of up to $400 per truck introduced on July 10.

While Jordan continues to coordinate humanitarian airdrops with Arab and Western partners, Momani stressed these efforts are not a substitute for ground convoys.

He pointed out that what was once a two-hour journey from Amman to Gaza now takes up to 36 hours due to restrictions and intentional delays.
