Former Germany star Michael Ballack spoke emotionally about the death of his son Emilio during a TV interview.

Former Germany, Bayern Munich and Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack spoke with deep emotion when discussing the death of his son Emilio for first time in several years.
Emilio died in 2021 at the age of 18 after a tragic accident involving quad bike. Since then Ballack has rarely spoken publicly about the loss. During interview on the program “My Story” on Sky, the former football star admitted that talking about the tragedy remains extremely difficult.
Ballack said the pain is almost impossible to describe explaining that the experience feels like something that cannot be put into words.
“Everyone deals with grief differently”
During the interview, Ballack struggled to hold back tears as he spoke about how he has tried to cope with the loss.
Ballack explained that each person handles grief in their own way. He admitted that he still finds it hard to speak about his son even though he would like to say more about him.
According to the former midfielder, the emotions can quickly become overwhelming.
He said that everyday life helps him keep moving forward mentioning his family, work and his other children as important sources of strength.
Life after loss
Ballack also reflected on how the tragedy changed his perspective on life. He explained that losing a child naturally increases fear and makes a person value life even more.
The former captain of the German national team said life is precious and should never be taken for granted. He described life itself as privilege and acknowledged that both luck and misfortune can play role in people’s journeys.
Despite the pain, Ballack said he is determined to face life and continue moving forward.
Emilio was one of Ballack’s three sons, Louis, 25 and Jordi, 21.
