Oktoberfest crimes span from Nazi salute to harassment on first days

A 25-year-old tourist from Italy has been charged at the Oktoberfest for allegedly performing the Hitler salute, which is illegal in Germany, in a festival tent.

He was charged with using symbols of unconstitutional organizations and released after paying a security deposit of €3,000 ($3,526), the police stated.

Other incidents reported by the police at the world-famous beer festival, which kicked off on Saturday, include one involving a Swiss tourist group who had to pay €18,000 after a brawl involving beer steins.

The dispute between five Swiss visitors aged between 39 and 43 and another group of revellers, aged between 46 and 47, broke out over the scarce seating at the event.

Five cases of sexual harassment were reported, including one involving a 23-year-old man who allegedly groped paramedics.

Additionally, two suspected pickpockets were arrested, and a 55-year-old man attempted to free a 19-year-old family member from police custody. Authorities are now investigating the case as an attempted prisoner rescue.
