Palestinians say 84 killed as Israel keeps up attacks in Gaza City

At least 84 people were killed in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, most of them in Gaza City, according to Palestinian medics.

The Israeli military said it came under heavy fire from inside Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital and blamed the Islamist group Hamas.

The army released video footage it said showed militants firing from the hospital in recent days.

Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of using medical facilities for military purposes, and its forces have previously carried out operations at al-Shifa.

Aid group CARE said a pregnant employee of a partner organization and her two children, aged 3 and 5, were killed when their home in Gaza City was hit in an airstrike. Her husband was seriously injured.

CARE also reported that a health centre run by another partner group was destroyed in a separate strike on Monday. It said the facility was one of the few still operating in the area. The organization did not explicitly assign blame but said the incidents occurred amid continuing Israeli attacks on Gaza City.

The Israeli military said it was reviewing the reports. None of the claims could be independently verified.

Israel launched a ground offensive in Gaza City last week that has driven hundreds of thousands of residents to flee.

The war began after Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and another 250 abducted and taken to Gaza.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza says more than 65,400 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the conflict. The figure, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians, is seen as broadly reliable by the United Nations and outside experts.
