CAN 2025 final: Senegalese Prime Minister calls for calm from Rabat

While on a visit to Morocco this Monday, January 26, 2026, Ousmane Sonko, the Senegalese Prime Minister, issued a call for calm more than a week after the chaotic CAN 2025 final.

On Monday, Ousmane Sonko urged calm and de-escalation following the stormy CAN 2025 final won by Senegal against Morocco. The Senegalese Prime Minister emphasized the strength of the relationship between the two nations. He stated that “Senegalese-Moroccan friendship is stronger than the emotions” that arose from the incidents during the January 18 clash.

And in response to ongoing tensions between Senegalese and Moroccan supporters on social media, Ousmane Sonko dismissed any political or cultural interpretation of the outbursts, describing them as “emotional excesses born from passion.”
