Southaven grocery store stays open during winter storm

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — A Southaven grocery store stayed open on Saturday as the winter storm hit the Mid-South.

Mark Gatlin, the manager of the South Point Grocery in Silo Square in Southaven, isn’t just talking about the winter storm that hit Saturday morning; he’s talking about the rush of customers that arctic winds blew through the door after he decided to open up.

“It has been unreal. It has been a frenzy,” said Mark Gatlin, manager of South Point Grocery at Silo Square. “A lot of customers, a lot of excitement, a lot of anticipation, and actually it’s been fairly fun.”

South Point has been opened about two and a half months, and Gatlin says the grocery was more than up to the challenge.

“The store’s ready, we’ve got milk, we’ve got bread, we’ve got eggs, we’ve got meat, we’ve got produce, the store is stocked. The employees are happy, and we’re happy to help the community,” said Gatlin.

Southaven resident Beth Allen and her family braved the icy roads out of a birthday emergency.

Because my son’s 20th birthday is tomorrow and he wanted red beans and rice and I did not buy the stuff for it,” said Beth Allen, grocery shopper.

“Ever since we first started coming here like they are great, they’re always stocked, and it’s always nice in here and everybody’s so friendly,” said Allen.

Another birthday emergency brought the Franklin family to the grocery store Saturday morning.

“Because my sister, she wants to make some pizza. So we went outside and tried to look for some pizza, because it’s also her birthday,” said Salayla Frankiln, shopping with family. “It was crazy, it’s very snowy out there. I don’t know, it’s like a lot, it’s ice.”

Mark Gatlin says deciding to open during the storm was easy.

“It’s good for the store, and it’s good for the community. It gives the shoppers a place to go when they wouldn’t have a place to go,” said Gatlin.

Gatlin said he plans to open South Point Grocery in Southaven on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
