India’s electric two wheeler market has just crossed a new threshold. Monthly wholesale dispatches are now holding above 100,000 units, and full year 2025 retail sales cleared roughly 1.27 million electric scooters and motorcycles.

And here’s the twist: startups lit the fire, and now the legacy giants are running the table. Once buyers got curious about electric, they didn’t necessarily stay loyal to the disruptors. They gravitated toward brands they already trusted. When daily transportation is on the line, familiarity matters. And in India, trust plus scale is a powerful combo.

For a while, it looked like pure EV brands would dominate India’s scooter future. Companies like Ola Electric and Ather Energy were the poster children of the transition. Fast forward to 2025 and the leaderboard tells a different story. It’s the old guard that has muscled its way to the top.

In fact, TVS Motor Company is now the volume king. The iQube alone moved around 298,000 units in 2025, giving TVS roughly a quarter of the entire electric two wheeler market. That’s not a niche play. That’s scale. And that also means that TVS is having the time of its life right now with the recent launch of the BMW F 450 GS which it co-developed, as well as the resurgence of Norton Motorcycles which it now owns.

Right behind it sits Bajaj Auto with the electric Chetak, clocking more than 260,000 units for the year. Bajaj leaned hard on its dealer network and brand trust, and it worked. Buyers who might have hesitated on a startup badge clearly felt more comfortable going electric with a name they’ve known for decades.

Ather Energy is still very much in the fight. Its Rizta helped push the brand north of 150,000 units in 2025. That’s serious volume for a company that started as a tech driven challenger. Meanwhile, Hero MotoCorp and its Vida sub brand cleared more than 110,000 units, making it one of the fastest growing players in the space.

Then there’s Ola Electric. Once the headline grabbing leader, it has slipped down the rankings even as the overall market expanded. It still sells meaningful numbers, but the momentum has clearly shifted.

All of this adds up to more than bragging rights. India sold over 1.27 million electric two wheelers in 2025 alone. Monthly dispatches staying above 100,000 units shows the supply chain and demand curve have stabilized. This is no longer a subsidy spike story. It’s a structural shift.

For the rest of the world, this matters because India is one of the largest two wheeler markets on Earth. Unlike the US or much of Europe, scooters in India are not lifestyle toys. They’re daily transportation. When that segment electrifies at scale, it changes manufacturing priorities, battery sourcing, and platform development worldwide.
