Toyota Motor has unveiled the Land Cruiser FJ, a compact addition to its Land Cruiser family, with sales in Japan targeted for mid-2026.
The model is scheduled for its first public appearance at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, running from 30 October to 9 November at Tokyo Big Sight.
The FJ becomes the fourth strand in the Land Cruiser range, alongside the 300 Series flagship, the 70 Series heavy-duty model and the 250 Series launched in 2024. Its wheelbase is 270 mm shorter than that of the 250 Series, contributing to a minimum turning circle of 5.5m.

In a statement, Toyota said: “With the addition of the new Land Cruiser FJ to the series, Toyota will provide new value in the form of ‘Freedom & Joy’ that come from enjoying the Land Cruiser in your own way―while retaining the reliability, durability, and off-road performance that support people’s lifestyles.”
According to Toyota, the FJ is built on the company’s IMV platform and adopts wheel articulation on a par with the 70 Series, aimed at preserving ground clearance and approach angles for off-road use.
The prototype vehicle measures 4,575mm in length, 1,855mm in width and 1,960mm in height, with a 2,580mm wheelbase intended to balance cabin room with agility.
Power is provided by Toyota’s 2TR-FE 2.7-litre petrol engine, paired with a six-speed Super ECT automatic gearbox and a part-time four-wheel-drive system.
The engine is rated at 120kW (163PS) and 246Nm of peak torque.
Toyota says the exterior follows a “dice motif” with chamfered edges and a boxy cabin to maximise passenger and load space.
The front and rear corner bumpers are split into replaceable sections to allow individual repairs after damage.
Inside, a horizontal instrument panel is designed to help convey vehicle attitude, with clustered displays and switches to limit eye movement during use. Toyota Safety Sense, the company’s active safety suite with pre-collision features, is included as standard.
The company plans optional accessories over the model’s life, such as round headlamps inspired by earlier Land Cruiser generations and MOLLE panels for outdoor gear.
Toyota is also working on the Land Hopper, an electric personal mobility device sized to fit in the FJ’s cargo area for use beyond drivable terrain; a launch date for this accessory has not been announced.
