Wedding celebration in Germany ends in brawl, bride hospitalized

A wedding celebration in western Germany descended into a brawl over the weekend, leaving several people injured, including the bride, police said on Monday.

A dispute during a wedding game escalated into a physical fight involving numerous guests.

A 39-year-old man and the bride were taken to hospital.

Police were initially told that around 30 people were involved, prompting officers to respond to the wedding in the town of Hemer, south-east of the city of Dortmund, on Saturday evening with a large deployment.

By the time police arrived, the fight had ended, but tensions remained high, a spokesman said.

Witnesses told police the altercation began during a wedding game known as “tie throwing,” a counterpart to the more familiar bouquet toss by the bride.

In the game, the groom’s tie is thrown into the crowd to symbolically identify the next groom.

Police are now investigating four men aged 19, 28, 39 and 47 on suspicion of assault, with the suspects accusing each other of causing bodily harm.
