However, video emerged on social media purporting to be Russian air defenses activated near the occupied city of Tokmak in Zaporizhzhia Oblast and several Telegram channels have suggested without verification that the Flanker was accidentally downed by friendly fire.<\/p>\n<p><u>https:\/\/twitter.com\/front_ukrainian\/status\/1707679523657945525<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\u201cVideo of the downing of a Russian Su-35 this night,\u201d the Russian WarGonzo Telegram channel posted. \u201cThe Russian air defense tried their best, firing at friendly forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8230;Tokmak is restless,\u201d the Ukrainian War Monitor Telegram channel wrote. \u201cVery early &#8211; the shooting down of an enemy tactical aircraft. We are waiting for details in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later, War Monitor posted an update.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good news is minus the Su-35 by Russian air defense forces at night over Tokmak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tokmak is <u>a prime target of Ukraine&#8217;s ongoing counteroffensive<\/u> through Zaporizhzhia Oblast and is about 20 miles from Ukrainian lines and within range of air defense systems like Ukraine\u2019s SA-11 <u>Buk<\/u>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 566px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:59%\" data-lightbox-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/nZDX4v3joOowjpW6dZOeOQ--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTE5OTI7aD0xMTc0\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/the_warzone_735\/9264317b9c1966865c6d74fcfb7e240b\"><span class=\"caas-img-wrapper\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tokmak is about 20 miles from Ukraine's front lines. With a powerful radar and long-range air-to-air weapons, as well as an <u>advanced electronic warfare suite<\/u>, the Su-35s are superior to Ukrainian fighters, and they <u>have proven to have a significant edge<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting that this appears to still be happening periodically, despite the Russian Aerospace Forces employing very rigid command and control over fighter ops, which hampers effectiveness but should make deconfliction with the ground-based air defenses relatively simple,\u201d military aviation expert Justin Bronk, Senior Research Fellow for Airpower and Military Technology at <u>RUSI<\/u>, London and Professor II at the <u>Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy<\/u>, said in a Tweet about the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Bronk appeared to be commenting hypothetically, without confirming a Flanker loss.<\/p>\n<p>That a Flanker would operate so close to the front line is \u201cunusual,\u201d he added. \u201cThe VKS generally takes great care to remain outside known and suspected Ukrainian SAM coverage.\u201d This is a tactic that has been omni-present since not long after Russia&#8217;s all-out invasion began and its air arm failed to achieve air superiority over Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Such a loss would be \u201can excellent example of how much chaos a few longer range drone or missile strikes can cause by keeping an enemies air defense network at both high readiness and trigger happy,&#8221; Gary Bagwell, a former RAF Senior Commander, president of the <u>UK Air &amp; Space Power Association<\/u> and <u>RUSI<\/u> Distinguished Fellow, said in response to Bronk. &#8220;Saturating or wearing out an enemy\u2019s AD system is a relatively simple element of a [suppression of enemy air defenses] SEAD Campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like Bronk, he appeared to be speaking hypothetically.<\/p>\n<p><u>https:\/\/twitter.com\/gregbagwell\/status\/1707701123019096439<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The assessment, however, matches the explanation provided to us by the commander of the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Directorate for why Kyiv has been carrying out attacks on Russian air defenses with <u>drones and missiles<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>One reason, said Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, is \u201cthat we\u2019re making those<u> holes in the overall air defense coverage<\/u>. Those holes are exploited for other things. Also, we&#8217;re depleting their air defense missile stocks because those are not limitless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about Budanov&#8217;s insights in our exclusive interview from his D.C. hotel room last week <u>here<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>The open-source tracking group Oryx said that this is <u>at least the fifth Su-35<\/u> Russia has lost since the all-out war began. That figure could be higher though because Oryx only counts losses it can visually verify. In this case, it <u>based its assessment<\/u> on the purported air defense video and the Fighterbomber statement we mentioned previously in this story.<\/p>\n<p>Russia has lost about 90 fixed-wing aircraft in combat since the start of the war out of\u00a0<u>about 900 tactical aircraft\u00a0<\/u>it had before Feb. 24, 2022, according to the U.K. Defense Ministry.<\/p>\n<p><u>https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceHQ\/status\/1707277098677629239?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1707277098677629239%7Ctwgr%5E4caa9d442a4b28a7bb1fc68573bae52d3b695182%7Ctwcon%5Es1_\\u0026ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedrive.com%2Fthe-war-zone%2Fukraine-situation-report-russia-has-gained-the-most-ground-this-year<\/u><\/p>\n<p>If it turns out that the Flanker was indeed shot down by a Russian air defense system, it would not be the first time that&#8217;s happened in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>In July, 2022, Russia apparently shot down one of its\u00a0<u>Su-34 Fullback strike fighters<\/u>\u00a0as it flew over the occupied Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine. One of its MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters was shot down in January by a Ukrainian-Army operated Osa air defense system, according to the <u><em>Key Aero<\/em> aviation news site<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>These things happen from time-to-time in highly contested airspace during a full-on war.
