The crown prince, Frederik, is 55.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Margrethe, the eldest of three daughters of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, acceded to the throne after her father\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1972\/01\/15\/archives\/frederik-of-denmark-dies-margrethe-to-be-queen-frederik-of-denmark.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">death<\/a> in 1972 \u2014 and after Denmark made a constitutional change to allow female succession, allowing the king to pass over his brother for Margrethe, his eldest child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Denmark\u2019s royal family, like its British counterpart, holds a largely ceremonial role under a parliamentary government. But Margrethe has been credited with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/these-danish-royals-have-been-forced-into-exile-by-a-family-feud\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">modernizing<\/a> the Danish monarchy and restoring its popularity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen \u2014 who will become the first female prime minister to proclaim a new monarch \u2014 thanked the queen in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAlthough the duty and role of the sovereign have been inherited for over 1,000 years, it is still difficult to comprehend that the time has come for a change of throne,\u201d Ms. Frederiksen said. \u201cMany of us have never known another monarch. Queen Margrethe is the epitome of Denmark, and, throughout the years, has articulated the words and emotions that define us as a people and a nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In her speech, Margrethe thanked the Danish people for their support, as well as \u201cthe successive governments, with whom it has always been rewarding to work, and to the Danish Parliament, which has always trusted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Much of the queen\u2019s popularity has been tied to her personality and artistic streak. Even after she entered the line of succession at 13, she pursued her interest in art, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kongehuset.dk\/en\/the-royal-family\/hm-the-queen\/#education\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earning<\/a> a diploma in prehistoric archaeology at the University of Cambridge and studying at Aarhus University in Denmark, the Sorbonne and the London School of Economics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She also produced her own artwork, including paintings shown in museums, decoupages \u2014 a type of cut-and-paste artwork \u2014 and drawings. (Her <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/europe\/denmark\/articles\/denmarks-queen-margrethe-illustrated-the-lord-of-the-rings\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">illustrations<\/a> were adapted for a \u201cLord of the Ring\u201d book under a pseudonym, Ingahild Grathmer; the book\u2019s publisher approached her after she sent copies to J.R.R. Tolkien as fan mail in 1970.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">More recently, she served as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt27727074\/fullcredits\/?ref_=tt_ql_1\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the costume and production designer<\/a> for \u201cEhrengard: The Art of Seduction,\u201d a Netflix film adapting a fairy tale, that includes wardrobes and sets based on her drawings and other artworks. \u201cI work when I can find the time,\u201d she told <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/10\/style\/ehrengard-queen-margrethe-netflix.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The New York Times<\/a> this past year, \u201cand I seem usually to be able to find the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though Margrethe has largely avoided the tabloid controversies that have plagued other royals around Europe, her family members have drawn headlines in the past. Her husband, Prince Henrik, had long complained about not being called king or king consort, and about relying on Margrethe for funds.
