She was 90.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her death was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bellasartesinba\/status\/1741498845127741761\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed<\/a> by Mexico\u2019s National Institute of Fine Arts and its National Theater Company, which did not say where she died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The National Theater Company <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNTeatromx\/status\/1741533568676086149\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">described<\/a> Ms. Murgu\u00eda on social media as \u201cone of Mexico\u2019s greatest actresses.\u201d In a statement, Lucina Jim\u00e9nez L\u00f3pez, the director of the National Institute of Fine Arts, described her career as one that \u201cmarked an entire era.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the 2017 film <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/19\/movies\/coco-pixar-politics.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cCoco,\u201d<\/a> made by Disney\u2019s Pixar Animation Studios, Ms. Murgu\u00eda plays the key role of Mama Coco, the great-grandmother of a boy, the protagonist Miguel, who finds himself in the land of the dead on a journey to uncover his family\u2019s history. At the emotional climax of the film, Miguel and Mama Coco sing the song \u201cRemember Me\u201d together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The movie, which is built around the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead, was celebrated for its portrayal of Mexican culture and its handling of weighty subjects like death in a children\u2019s movie. It won best animated feature and best original song, for \u201cRemember Me,\u201d at the 2018 Oscars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cCoco\u201d introduced Ms. Murgu\u00eda to a global audience, but she was well-known in Mexico long before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was born on Dec. 8, 1933, in Mexico City. She studied acting at Mexico\u2019s National School of Theater Arts and made her debut in 1954 in the play \u201cTrial By Fire.\u201d Her first screen role was in the 1964 film \u201cTransit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She would go on to appear in more than 70 plays and 90 films, working with some of Mexico\u2019s best filmmakers. Hailed for her versatility, she often played the role of the villain or antagonist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Information on her survivors was not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At Mexico\u2019s prestigious Ariel awards, Ms. Murgu\u00eda won best supporting actress for her performances in \u201cCadena Perpetua,\u201d in 1979; \u201cLos Motivos de Luz,\u201d in 1986; and \u201cLa Reina de la Noche\u201d (The Queen of the Night), in 1996. She was nominated for best actress five times but never won.
