{"id":15570,"date":"2024-01-10T02:30:07","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T07:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/sport\/jessica-pegula-advances-to-the-adelaide-international-quarters\/10\/01\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-01-10T02:30:07","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T07:30:07","slug":"jessica-pegula-advances-to-the-adelaide-international-quarters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/sport\/jessica-pegula-advances-to-the-adelaide-international-quarters\/10\/01\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Jessica Pegula advances to the Adelaide International quarters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p>ADELAIDE, Australia &#8212; Second-seeded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jessica Pegula<\/a> had a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over fellow American <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bernarda Pera<\/a> on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International.<\/p>\n<p>Pera earned a spot in the main draw as a so-called lucky loser from qualifying and then upset former No. 2-ranked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Paula Badosa<\/a> in the opening round.<\/p>\n<p>Pegula went 1-for-10 on break points in the first set as Pera&#8217;s powerful left-handed game led to the unseeded player&#8217;s early advantage.<\/p>\n<p>But Pegula found her rhythm in the second set, where she hit 11 winners to six unforced errors.<\/p>\n<p>Pegula will next face <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova<\/a>, who beat fellow qualifier <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Katerina Siniakova<\/a> 2-6., 6-3, 6-2.<\/p>\n<p>Adelaide is among the last tune-up events for the Australian Open, which starts Sunday in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Top-seeded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Elena Rybakina<\/a>, last year&#8217;s Australian Open finalist and winner of the Brisbane International on Sunday, was scheduled to play later Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tommy Paul<\/a>, the top-seeded player in the men&#8217;s draw in Adelaide, was also set to play Australian qualifier <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Alex Bolt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SINNER STAYS HOT AT KOOYONG<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jannik Sinner<\/a> skipped official lead-in tournaments for the Australian Open and preferred to play at the Kooyong Classic exhibition in Melbourne, which also features No. 8-ranked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Holger Rune<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=235\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Andy Murray<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Playing his first match of the season on Wednesday, Sinner beat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Marc Polmans<\/a> 6-4, 6-0.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old Sinner finished 2023 by beating No. 1-ranked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Novak Djokovic<\/a> in the round-robin stage of the ATP Finals in Turin and again a week later as he led Italy to the Davis Cup title in Malaga.<\/p>\n<p>He also won late-season titles in Beijing and Vienna which included wins over No. 2 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> and third-ranked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Daniil Medvedev<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner&#8217;s best result at the Australian Open came in 2022 with a quarterfinal appearance. His best Grand Slam singles to date was a semifinal run last year at Wimbledon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a good end of season last year and I&#8217;m starting from zero to try and get confidence from last year again,&#8221; Sinner said. &#8220;It&#8217;s obviously tough in the first match you play but I was happy with today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEHRTENS ADVANCES AT HOBART<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Top-seeded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Elise Mertens<\/a> has advanced to the quarterfinals at the Hobart International after a 6-2, 6-3 win over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Anna Karolina Schmiedlova<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mehrtens is attempting to win her third Hobart title. The Belgian player, who won in Hobart in 2017 and 2018, will meet Dutch veteran <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Arantxa Rus<\/a> for a place in the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That would be amazing (to win the tournament again).
