{"id":15699,"date":"2024-01-11T06:41:13","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T11:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/an-opera-superfans-surprise-gift-1-7-million-for-the-arts\/11\/01\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-01-11T06:41:13","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T11:41:13","slug":"an-opera-superfans-surprise-gift-1-7-million-for-the-arts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/an-opera-superfans-surprise-gift-1-7-million-for-the-arts\/11\/01\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"An Opera Superfan\u2019s Surprise Gift: $1.7 Million for the Arts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Lois Kirschenbaum, a cultural aficionado who was a fixture at the Metropolitan Opera for more than half a century, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/07\/arts\/music\/lois-kirschenbaum-dead.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">died in 2021 at 88<\/a>, star singers gave tributes and fellow fans offered remembrances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But that was not the end of Kirschenbaum\u2019s relationship with the arts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though even her closest friends didn\u2019t know, Kirschenbaum, a former switchboard operator who lived in a rent-controlled apartment in the East Village, had made plans to give away a large share of her life savings \u2014 some $1.7 million \u2014 to cultural groups upon her death. After years of legal proceedings, donations of $215,000 apiece have started to arrive, surprising groups like New York City Opera, American Ballet Theater, Carnegie Hall and the Public Theater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI was just astonished,\u201d said John Hauser, the president of the George and Nora London Foundation for Singers, one of the recipients. \u201cI had no idea that she had that kind of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kirschenbaum had no spouse, siblings or children, and lived a no-frills lifestyle, working as a switchboard operator for the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian aid organization, until her retirement in 2004. On most nights, she traveled by bus and subway to Lincoln Center, where she secured free or cheap tickets just before performances began.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Elena Villafane, a lawyer for the executor of the estate, said that Kirschenbaum had \u201can incredibly frugal, Depression-era lifestyle.\u201d Her father was an optometrist who died in 1990, Villafane said; his first and second wives died before him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShe didn\u2019t take a cab, her furniture was old, she didn\u2019t spend money on clothes, she wasn\u2019t going to Bloomingdale\u2019s,\u201d Villafane said of Kirschenbaum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhatever little money she spent,\u201d she added, \u201cshe spent on the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For decades, Kirschenbaum was the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/10\/nyregion\/lois-kirschenbaum-79-art-buff-and-queen-of-the-nosebleed-seats.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">doyenne of hard-core opera buffs<\/a> who populated the standing-room sections at the Met. Legally blind from birth, she often watched performances from the uppermost balcony through large binoculars. After the curtain call, she rushed to the stage door for autographs, bringing a bag full of memorabilia \u2014 photos, recordings and scores \u2014 to be signed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Susan Jaffe, the artistic director of American Ballet Theater, who was a principal dancer with the company from 1983 to 2002, recalled seeing Kirschenbaum frequently after performances.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIn the world of ballet, Lois Kirschenbaum was not just a devoted fan \u2014 she was a silent force, an unwavering presence outside the stage door,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cLittle did we know, behind her humble demeanor, she held the power to surprise us with a wonderful legacy gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kirschenbaum\u2019s devotion helped her befriend opera stars including Beverly Sills, Ren\u00e9e Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti and Pl\u00e1cido Domingo. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/23\/arts\/music\/lois-kirschenbaum-metropolitan-opera.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dutifully signing her belongings<\/a> became a rite of passage for some singers. While they chatted, Kirschenbaum gathered information about their upcoming appearances and compiled it in homemade lists that she distributed to fellow opera buffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She left behind a trove of memorabilia \u2014 thousands of programs, many of them autographed, and even a few pairs of ballet slippers \u2014 that she directed to be given to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The library has not yet received her items, but Bob Kosovsky, a rare books and manuscripts librarian who knew Kirschenbaum and helped pack up her belongings, called the material the \u201cdocumentation of the superfan.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He pointed to her frequent notes in the margins of her programs. In 1978, the New York Philharmonic gave three performances of a program that featured the final scene from Strauss\u2019s opera \u201cSalome.\u201d She wrote in the program from one concert: \u201cEven better than 1st perf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou really get a sense of her personality,\u201d Kosovsky said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The total distribution from Kirschenbaum\u2019s estate, about $4 million, is being divided equally among 18 nonprofit organizations and one individual, a woman who helped care for her and her father. In addition to her donations to cultural institutions, she left money for Jewish groups including the Simon Wiesenthal Center, as well as for nonprofits that assist the blind, such as the American Foundation for the Blind. And she gave to her former employer, the International Rescue Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite her enthusiasm for Met performances, Kirschenbaum did not leave a gift for the opera house. Friends have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/23\/arts\/music\/lois-kirschenbaum-metropolitan-opera.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">speculated<\/a> that she might have been angered by the company\u2019s decision in the early 1990s \u2014 around the time she created her will \u2014 to ban her backstage, relegating her to the stage door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Instead, she gave money to other opera groups, including several that help young singers: the London foundation, the Richard Tucker Music Foundation and Opera Index.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The London foundation, named for the storied bass-baritone George London and his wife, Nora, announced this week that it planned to give an award in Kirschenbaum\u2019s honor at its competition for young singers next month. Kirschenbaum, who knew the Londons from backstage at the Met, was a frequent guest at the foundation\u2019s events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShe was the absolute perfect spectator,\u201d said Hauser, from the foundation. \u201cI can\u2019t think of anyone who loves opera quite as voraciously as she did. She was just an opera superfan.
