They were directed at cities including Kyiv, the capital, and Lviv, near the border with Poland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It followed Russia\u2019s recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/30\/world\/europe\/russia-ukraine-missiles-kyiv.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">strategy for large-scale air assaults<\/a>: waves of different types of aerial weapons launched almost simultaneously from multiple locations and aimed at various targets, with the goal of overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/kpszsu\/9766\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ukrainian Air Force said<\/a> that it had shot down eight missiles \u2014 a low interception rate compared with previous assaults \u2014 but that more than 20 other missiles and drones had missed their targets because of electronic jamming. Russia\u2019s Defense Ministry <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/mod_russia_en\/11894\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> that its missiles had hit \u201cUkrainian military-industrial complex facilities\u201d that produce shells, gunpowder and drones. Neither of the claims could be independently verified.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The assault was part of an air campaign that Russia began in late December, targeting industrial and military infrastructure, and repeatedly hitting civilian areas in the process. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has said that Moscow launched about 500 missiles and drones against his country in attacks around the New Year\u2019s holidays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Saturday, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/poltavskaOVA\/11882\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/kirovogradskaODA\/8504\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">authorities<\/a> reported explosions, some of which may have been caused by Ukrainian air defenses, in cities such as Kremenchuk and Kropyvnytskyi in central Ukraine. Oleksiy Kuleba, the deputy head of Ukraine\u2019s presidential office, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/OleksiyKuleba\/3958\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said that the \u201cmass attack\u201d<\/a> had caused damage to civilian buildings in three regions, but that there had been no casualties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A few hours after air-raid sirens stopped wailing in Kyiv, St\u00e9phane S\u00e9journ\u00e9, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/12\/world\/europe\/france-macron-cabinet-reshuffle.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">France\u2019s newly appointed foreign minister<\/a>, arrived there for his first trip abroad, in a visit aimed at showing the West\u2019s continued support amid concerns that Ukraine\u2019s allies are growing tired of a protracted war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cUkraine is and will remain France\u2019s priority,\u201d Mr. S\u00e9journ\u00e9, who was also expected to meet with Mr. Zelensky, said during a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/francediplo\/status\/1746144439544754235\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">news conference<\/a> with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba. Mr. S\u00e9journ\u00e9 added that this would continue to be the case \u201cdespite the growing number of crises,\u201d a reference to Israel\u2019s war in Gaza and the recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/12\/world\/middleeast\/houthis-yemen-us-strikes-retaliation.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">fighting around the Red Sea<\/a>, both of which have drawn international attention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A day earlier, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/12\/world\/europe\/uk-ukraine-military-aid.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain visited Kyiv<\/a>, pledging more than $3 billion in military aid to Ukraine in the next financial year and signing a bilateral security agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Saturday\u2019s attack was the fourth large-scale nationwide assault against Ukraine in about two weeks. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/08\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-missiles.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">In the previous attack<\/a>, on Monday, Ukraine said it had intercepted only about a third of the missiles launched against its territory. Military analysts said that was a sign that Ukraine is running short of the surface-to-air missiles required to shoot down incoming Russian missiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe lack modern air defense systems badly,\u201d President Zelensky acknowledged during a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/10\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war-support-europe.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">trip to Lithuania on Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ukrainian officials said in the fall that Russia had stockpiled more than 800 high-precision missiles in preparation for huge attacks designed to wear down Ukrainian defenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the three previous large air assaults against Ukraine, Russia fired a total of over 270 missiles, including several of its hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, one of the most sophisticated weapons in Russia\u2019s arsenal. The volume consumed Ukraine\u2019s air defenses, leaving it more vulnerable to future attacks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cUkraine has expended a significant stock of missiles on these three attacks,\u201d Yurii Ihnat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WY8sDvZdWEA&amp;ab_channel=%D0%A2%D0%A1%D0%9D\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said on national television on Tuesday<\/a>. \u201cTherefore, there is a shortage of antiaircraft guided missiles, and no one hides it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The dearth of air defenses means that Ukraine has to divide resources between the front line and cities far from the fighting, leaving some places less well defended than others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Russia\u2019s successive attacks are also eating into its own missile stockpile, and it may not be able to sustain these large-scale assaults in the long term. Around 40 missiles were fired on Saturday, less than a third of the number launched in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/29\/world\/europe\/russia-ukraine-missile-attacks.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the first mass attack, on Dec. 29<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ukraine, meanwhile, lacking the capacity to produce air defense systems domestically, depends on its Western allies for supplies to protect its skies.
