If it wasn\u2019t already clear, we\u2019ve got a formidable Oscar front-runner on our hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">An appreciative Nolan used his speech to thank \u201call the critics who helped with convincing mainstream audiences that a film about quantum physics and apocalypse could be worth their time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though \u201cOppenheimer\u201d won in the biggest categories at the Critics Choice Awards, it was the film\u2019s box office frenemy, \u201cBarbie,\u201d that entered the night as the most nominated movie, with a record-breaking 18 citations. Greta Gerwig\u2019s hit comedy managed six wins, including trophies for its costumes, production design and song (\u201cI\u2019m Just Ken\u201d), but since most of those awards were announced in the margins before a commercial break, host Chelsea Handler \u201cwent rogue\u201d near the end of the show and brought up Gerwig and star Margot Robbie to make a speech anyway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Robbie was genuinely taken aback by the gesture. \u201cWhen everyone is like, \u2018Oh, this is so unexpected,\u2019 this is actually unexpected and was not a part of the show,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The night\u2019s quartet of film acting trophies went to performers who had already picked up Golden Globes, though the lead wins still came in very competitive categories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Emma Stone acknowledged as much when she picked up her best-actress trophy for \u201cPoor Things,\u201d admitting, \u201cI\u2019m going to be honest, I\u2019m in full-blown shock,\u201d before shouting out her fellow nominees, including \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d actress <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/06\/movies\/lily-gladstone-killers-of-the-flower-moon.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Lily Gladstone<\/a>. \u201cI didn\u2019t have anything that I was going to say because this is completely crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The lead-actor award went to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/07\/movies\/paul-giamatti-the-holdovers.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Paul Giamatti<\/a> for his portrayal of a dyspeptic history teacher in \u201cThe Holdovers.\u201d The actor gave a moving speech in honor of his late father (<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/09\/02\/obituaries\/giamatti-scholar-and-baseball-chief-dies-at-51.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">A. Bartlett Giamatti<\/a>, a president of Yale and later the commissioner of Major League Baseball), but not before joking about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/golden-globes-2024-paul-giamatti-celebrates-win-dinner-in-n-out-8423954\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his much-snapped trip<\/a> to the California burger joint In N Out after winning his Golden Globe: \u201cI didn\u2019t think my week could go any better than going viral for eating a cheeseburger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The supporting trophies were awarded to Giamatti\u2019s co-star Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph and \u201cOppenheimer\u201d foil Downey, the latter of whom took the opportunity to read some of the most withering reviews he\u2019s received in his career. But one of the night\u2019s buzziest moments came early in the show when Handler alluded to the dismally received Golden Globes monologue delivered by her ex-boyfriend, Jo Koy, who threw his writers under the bus at that awards show when his jokes went sour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After cracking wise about her crush on Martin Scorsese, Handler told the crowd with a smirk, \u201cThank you for laughing at that.
