But the number solved has fallen to a grave low, only 12%.<\/p>\n<p>Getting away with murder has become normal.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of high rates of crime, poverty and unemployment make insecurity an overriding concern throughout society.<\/p>\n<p>The brash confidence of violent criminals is vividly illustrated by the very public phenomenon of cash-in-transit hijacks, known here simply as CIT.<\/p>\n<p>Security vans carrying money are rammed off busy daytime roads by deliberate attacks with vehicles, with guards set upon by heavily armed men who use bombs to blow open safes.<\/p>\n<p>Robberies can last extended periods, with motorway traffic continuing normally on the other side of the road while gangs prime their explosives and rove about with automatic weapons, sometimes filmed by onlookers.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 540px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%\" data-lightbox-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/wuoUj3tZfvAiQrUHSddA.A--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTE5NTI7aD0xMDk4\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/084281e4d4338280c4ad46d8194ad33f\"><span class=\"caas-img-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A van heist\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/I9kGkhWuEdvDv3Js_EEuZA--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA--\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/084281e4d4338280c4ad46d8194ad33f\" class=\"caas-img\"\/><button class=\"link caas-lightbox\" aria-label=\"View larger image\" data-ylk=\"sec:image-lightbox;slk:lightbox-open;elm:expand;itc:1\"><span class=\"openArrows icon\"><svg width=\"22\" height=\"22\" viewbox=\"0 0 22 22\"><path d=\"M12.372 0.92C12.372 0.414 12.782 0.004 13.287 0.004L21 0L20.996 7.712C20.996 8.217 20.586 8.628 20.08 8.628C19.574 8.628 19.164 8.217 19.164 7.712V3.183L12.337 10.011L10.988 8.663L17.816 1.835H13.287C12.782 1.835 12.372 1.425 12.372 0.92ZM1.835 17.816L8.663 10.988L10.012 12.337L3.183 19.164H7.712C8.218 19.164 8.627 19.574 8.627 20.08C8.627 20.586 8.218 20.995 7.712 20.995L0 21L0.004 13.287C0.004 12.782 0.414 12.372 0.92 12.372C1.425 12.372 1.835 12.782 1.835 13.287V17.816Z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">Security vans carrying money are rammed off busy daytime roads<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Wahl Bartmann, head of security firm ADT Fidelity, says the gangs are &#8220;like a terrorist group&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been very military organised, well executed, and if you see the way that they plan these robberies, it&#8217;s very difficult for our teams to stop that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He wants more help from government, saying CIT services are essential &#8211; they pay social grants every month, and move cash for banks and retailers.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen of the company&#8217;s guards were killed last year during robberies.<\/p>\n<p>Lenience, a guard who survived a recent hijacking, says &#8220;as a human being I&#8217;m scared&#8221; and that he prays each morning to survive the day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I might not come back &#8211; but that&#8217;s life for everyone in CIT,&#8221; he says, not wishing to use his second name.<\/p>\n<p>A feature of life in South Africa is the sheer number of private security officers, who patrol in vehicles bearing their company logos, and in some areas almost every home and building has a sign showing which firm it relies on.<\/p>\n<p>They now outnumber their police counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Lizette Lancaster, of South Africa&#8217;s Institute for Security Studies, says there has been a &#8220;private securitisation of public spaces&#8221; in some areas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vast majority of South Africans cannot afford these services but feel equally failed by the police.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So they often form their own self-help groups &#8211; militias and vigilantism is thriving in those communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I joined a response team from ADT Fidelity late one night in Johannesburg. They routinely engage armed robbers, coming under fire and breaking up ongoing hijackings.<\/p>\n<p>Guns in hand in case of sudden trouble, the small convoy set off and an alert quickly arrived &#8211; a vehicle had been stolen.<\/p>\n<p>Like other vehicles with a private security subscription, the stolen car had a small electronic tracker secreted within, which robbers desperately try to locate, knowing armed teams can accurately pursue as long as it remains intact.<\/p>\n<p>After a chase into the south of the city, the team spotted two men running from the car&#8217;s possible location and they were apprehended at gunpoint.<\/p>\n<p>But they were not the robbers and were let go.
