{"id":16837,"date":"2024-01-22T09:09:48","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T14:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/israel-hamas-war-live-updates-the-new-york-times-3\/22\/01\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-01-22T09:09:48","modified_gmt":"2024-01-22T14:09:48","slug":"israel-hamas-war-live-updates-the-new-york-times-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/israel-hamas-war-live-updates-the-new-york-times-3\/22\/01\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel-Hamas War: Live Updates &#8211; The New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel doubled down on his opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state this weekend, again rebuffing pressure from President Biden to agree to that path after the war in Gaza is over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy insistence is what has prevented \u2014 over the years \u2014 the establishment of a Palestinian state that would have constituted an existential danger to Israel,\u201d Mr. Netanyahu said in a statement in Hebrew on Sunday. \u201cAs long as I am prime minister, I will continue to strongly insist on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The statement reiterated comments he made on social media the previous day, when he said in Hebrew that he \u201cwill not compromise on full Israeli security control of the entire area west of the Jordan River \u2014 and that is irreconcilable with a Palestinian state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s comments came after Mr. Biden spoke to him on Friday <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/19\/us\/politics\/biden-calls-netanyahu-as-their-views-on-the-conduct-of-the-gaza-war-diverge.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">about a two-state solution<\/a> and floated the possibility of a disarmed Palestinian nation that would not threaten Israel\u2019s security. Mr. Biden has argued that the creation of a Palestinian state is the only viable long-term resolution to a conflict that has dragged on for decades, repeating a position held by most American presidents and European leaders in recent history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">While there was no indication that Mr. Netanyahu would ease his strenuous opposition, which is popular with his fragile right-wing political coalition, Mr. Biden had expressed optimism that they might yet find consensus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere are a number of types of two-state solutions,\u201d the president told reporters at the White House several hours after Friday\u2019s call, their first in nearly a month amid tension over the war. \u201cThere\u2019s a number of countries that are members of the U.N. that are still \u2014 don\u2019t have their own militaries. Number of states that have limitations.\u201d He added, \u201cAnd so I think there\u2019s ways in which this could work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">On Sunday, Grant Shapps, Britain\u2019s defense secretary, called Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s stance \u201cdisappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere isn\u2019t another option,\u201d Mr. Shapps told Sky News in a televised interview. \u201cThe whole world has agreed that the two-state solution is the best way forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the U.N. secretary general, said that denying statehood for the Palestinian people was \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe right of the Palestinian people to build their own state must be recognized by all,\u201d Mr. Guterres <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/1748909531738812796?s=20\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> on X, without referencing Mr. Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The Biden administration and the Israeli government have diverged sharply over how Gaza will be governed when the fighting ends. President Biden and his top diplomat, Antony J. Blinken, have urged Israeli officials to move toward the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Mr. Biden has suggested that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/24\/world\/middleeast\/palestinian-authority-gaza-war.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a \u201crevitalized\u201d Palestinian Authority<\/a>, which is based in the West Bank, could take over Gaza once Hamas has been removed from power there. Mr. Netanyahu has rejected the idea of the authority returning to the enclave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Despite support from the international community, a two-state approach still faces enormous obstacles, including waning support for it among the Israeli and Palestinian populations, the continued building of settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and a divided Palestinian leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Two key partners in Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s coalition \u2014 Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister, and Itamar Ben-Gvir, the national security minister \u2014 are staunch <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bezalelsm\/status\/1748760511728988286\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opponents<\/a> of a two-state solution.
