The deaths were the first U.S. military fatalities from hostile fire in the turmoil spilling over from Israel\u2019s war with Hamas in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The attack happened at a base near the Syrian border. The deaths of U.S. service members will almost certainly put more pressure on President Biden to respond more forcefully as turmoil grows in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhile we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,\u201d Biden said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This month, at least four U.S. service members stationed in western Iraq were injured when their base came under fire from what the U.S. said were Iran-backed militias. A week ago, the U.S. declared two Navy SEALs dead after their disappearance during an operation at sea to intercept weapons headed to Houthi fighters, who have fired on commercial ships off Yemen since November.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-9ycfei eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6ad7d27b\">New details on the U.N. workers accused of aiding Hamas<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The U.N. said on Friday that it had fired several employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, the U.N. agency that aids Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, after Israel claimed 12 employees played a role in the Hamas attacks against Israel on Oct. 7 or in their aftermath. Israel provided a dossier to the U.S. detailing its claims, but little was known about the accusations <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/28\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-unrwa-hamas-israel.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">until the documents were reviewed yesterday by The Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One person was accused of kidnapping a woman. Another is said to have handed out ammunition. A third was described as taking part in the massacre at a kibbutz where 97 people died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Israelis described 10 of the employees as members of Hamas, with seven of the accused also said to be teachers at UNRWA schools, instructing students in subjects like math and Arabic. The dossier said Israel tracked and monitored many of the accused employees through their phones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Fallout:<\/strong> The U.S. and several other countries said yesterday that they were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/27\/world\/middleeast\/pause-funding-gaza-unrwa.html?searchResultPosition=6\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">suspending some funding for UNRWA<\/a>. Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the head of the U.N., implored the major donor countries to continue their support. He said that, without it, UNRWA would run out of money next month.
