be able to use a friend\u2019s Hulu account to watch Season 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Walt Disney Company, which owns Hulu, joined Netflix this week in banning password sharing in an effort to boost the company\u2019s subscriber numbers and make its streaming services business profitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/view.hulumail.com\/?qs=87ab66c6388b6397b375ce8b06c2dc1e039e3cc96994bed24aff10d7a59453c7ef2e1be7643e3904406fffa5a5df7e972e2040e76474ffe9031022743ab5d0c4668915787695f56e63ed29b3427e07ce\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an email to its subscribers<\/a> on Wednesday, Hulu said it would start \u201cadding limitations on sharing your account outside of your household,\u201d beginning March 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company added that it would analyze account use, and that it could suspend or terminate accounts that shared login details beyond their households.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Jan. 25, Disney+, ESPN+ and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/subscriber_agreement\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hulu<\/a>, all services owned by Disney, updated their terms of service agreements to prohibit viewers from \u201cusing another person\u2019s username, password or other account information\u201d to access their content.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Disney, whose streaming catalog includes Star Wars, Pixar and Marvel movies, aims to turn a profit on its streaming services this year, according to earnings reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Disney\u2019s chief executive, Bob Iger, foreshadowed the password crackdown in a third-quarter <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/thewaltdisneycompany.com\/app\/uploads\/2023\/08\/q3-fy23-earnings-transcript.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earnings call<\/a> last August in which the company <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/09\/business\/media\/disney-earnings.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reported losses of $512 million<\/a> on its three streaming services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the call, Mr. Iger said that the company believed there was a \u201csignificant\u201d amount of password sharing among its users, and that a crackdown would result in some growth in subscriber numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe certainly have established this as a real priority,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we actually think that there\u2019s an opportunity here to help us grow our business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In its quest to push its streaming services business into the black, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/01\/business\/media\/disney-hulu-purchase.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Disney took full control of Hulu<\/a>, which was already profitable, in November.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On its password crackdown, Disney has taken a lead from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/27\/business\/media\/netflix-streaming-password.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Netflix<\/a>, which last May announced that it would begin kicking people off its service if it detected use from a different I.P. address than the one registered with the subscription.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For households willing to pay for an additional person to have access to their account, Netflix said it would charge an extra $7.99 per person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was not immediately clear whether Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN+ subscribers would have an option to purchase additional account access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some Disney+ subscribers took to social media on Thursday to express confusion over the new rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI wonder what this means if it\u2019s actually me using my subscription at two different houses?\u201d one person wrote on Reddit. \u201cMy mom watches my kid so I have my Disney+ on her TV. Is that not going to be allowed?
