Adele Springsteen, who nurtured the budding musical talent of her son, the pioneering rock star Bruce Springsteen, died on Wednesday. She was 98.<\/p>\n
Mr. Springsteen announced his mother\u2019s death in an Instagram post<\/a> on Thursday. No cause was given, but Ms. Springsteen had struggled for more than a decade with Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n Her son has been outspoken about his relationship with his mother and her influence on him.<\/p>\n Ms. Springsteen rented him his first guitar when he was 7, he said in 2021 during his Broadway show<\/a>, \u201cBruce on Broadway,\u201d which ran for more than two months as the city began to emerge from pandemic-related closures. The show had wide-ranging reflections, including thoughts about his mother.<\/p>\n It was also Ms. Springsteen, he told the brimming Broadway audiences, at the St. James Theater, who danced to 1940s swing music and impressed in him the joys of bop-inspiring tunes, according to the NBC program \u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n He also spoke of his mother\u2019s ability to persist in her vivacious spirit even as aging and a punishing disease took their toll.<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s 10 years into Alzheimer\u2019s,\u201d he said<\/a>. \u201cShe\u2019s 95. But the need to dance, that need to dance is something that hasn\u2019t left her. She can\u2019t speak. She can\u2019t stand. But when she sees me, there\u2019s a smile.\u201d<\/p>\n Ms. Springsteen was born Adele Zerilli on May 4, 1925, in Brooklyn.<\/a> She married Douglas Springsteen, with whom she had her son in 1949 and later two daughters, Virginia and Pamela.<\/p>\n She worked as a legal secretary and raised a young working-class family in Freehold, N.J., while her husband often struggled to find steady work and grappled with mental illness. He died in 1998<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cShe willed we would be a family and we were,\u201d Mr. Springsteen wrote in \u201cBorn To Run,\u201d his memoir. \u201cShe willed we would not disintegrate and we did not.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Ms. Springsteen\u2019s high-spirited ethos, ever-present, seemed to be the through line in her life, and one that buoyed the lives of the people around her.<\/p>\n \u201cMy mother is the great energy \u2014 she\u2019s the energy of the show,\u201d Mr. Springsteen told The Miami Herald in 1987. \u201cThe consistency, the steadiness, day after day \u2014 that\u2019s her.\u201d He added that \u201cit was she who created the sense of stability in the family, so that we never felt threatened through all the hard times.\u201d<\/p>\n In the Instagram post on Thursday announcing his mother\u2019s death, Mr. Springsteen shared a video of his mother, in old age, dancing to \u201cIn the Mood\u201d by Glenn Miller, captioned with an excerpt from his own 1998 song about her, \u201cThe Wish.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m older but you\u2019ll know me in a glance,\u201d it read. \u201dWe\u2019ll find us a little rock \u2018n roll bar and we\u2019ll go out and dance.\u201d<\/p>\n Aimee Ortiz contributed reporting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
