{"id":18313,"date":"2024-02-04T07:53:32","date_gmt":"2024-02-04T12:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/namibias-president-dies-aged-82\/04\/02\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-02-04T07:53:32","modified_gmt":"2024-02-04T12:53:32","slug":"namibias-president-dies-aged-82","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/namibias-president-dies-aged-82\/04\/02\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Namibia&#8217;s president dies aged 82"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Namibia&#8217;s President Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.<\/p>\n<p>A veteran of the country&#8217;s independence struggle, Mr Geingob had been diagnosed with cancer and revealed the details to the public last month.<\/p>\n<p>He died early on Sunday with his wife and children by his side, Vice-President <span class=\"caas-xray-inline-tooltip\"><span class=\"caas-xray-inline caas-xray-entity caas-xray-pill rapid-nonanchor-lt\" data-entity-id=\"Nangolo_Mbumba\" data-ylk=\"cid:Nangolo_Mbumba;pos:2;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\"><a href=\"https:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=Nangolo%20Mbumba\" data-i13n=\"cid:Nangolo_Mbumba;pos:2;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nangolo Mbumba;cid:Nangolo_Mbumba;pos:2;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Nangolo Mbumba<\/a><\/span><\/span> announced.<\/p>\n<p>Namibia &#8220;has lost&#8230; a distinguished servant of the people&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He was first sworn-in as president in 2015, but had served in top political positions since independence in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>According to the constitution, Mr Mbumba is first in line to become the next president as there was less than a year left of Mr Geingob&#8217;s second term in office. Presidential and parliamentary elections had already been scheduled for November.<\/p>\n<p>The exact cause of the president&#8217;s death was not given but last month he underwent &#8220;a two-day novel treatment for cancerous cells&#8221; in the US before flying back home on 31 January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DrHageGeingob\/posts\/pfbid0eDjGBgzmvTrpsVkHHj1NSGA5feH1MaFP6LepK5WWPZUeYeRk8gwDWLdhmnvUvB58l\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:his office had said;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">his office had said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Namibian radio, people have been paying tribute to someone they described as a visionary as well as a jovial man, who was able to share a joke.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders from around the world have been sending condolence messages with many talking about Mr Geingob&#8217;s efforts to ensure his country&#8217;s freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Among them has been Cyril Ramaphosa, president of neighbouring South Africa, who described him as &#8220;a towering veteran of Namibia&#8217;s liberation from colonialism and apartheid&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Geinbob, a tall man with a deep, gravelly voice and a commanding presence was a long-serving member of the Swapo party. But five years later that had fallen to 56%.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Geingob&#8217;s first term coincided with a stagnant economy and high levels of unemployment and poverty, according to the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>His party also faced a number of corruption scandals during his time in office.
