{"id":18346,"date":"2024-02-04T12:48:05","date_gmt":"2024-02-04T17:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/sport\/barry-john-wales-rugby-great-dies-aged-79-rugby-union-news\/04\/02\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-02-04T12:48:05","modified_gmt":"2024-02-04T17:48:05","slug":"barry-john-wales-rugby-great-dies-aged-79-rugby-union-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/sport\/barry-john-wales-rugby-great-dies-aged-79-rugby-union-news\/04\/02\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Barry John: Wales rugby great dies aged 79 | Rugby Union News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div data-component-name=\"sdc-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Wales rugby great Barry John has died at the age of 79.<\/p>\n<p>The former Wales and British and Irish Lions fly-half died peacefully in hospital, his family announced.<\/p>\n<p>A family statement read: &#8220;Barry John died peacefully today at the University Hospital of Wales surrounded by his loving wife and four children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was a loving Dadcu to his 11 grandchildren and much-loved brother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>John, who was nicknamed &#8216;The King&#8217; by New Zealand journalists after he inspired the Lions&#8217; famous 1971 Test series victory over the All Blacks, won 25 Wales caps between 1966 and 1972.<\/p>\n<p>He also played in five Lions Tests on their 1968 and 1971 tours, before retiring from rugby at the age of 27.<\/p>\n<p>John played his club rugby for Llanelli and then Cardiff, where he struck up a half-back partnership with Gareth Edwards that went on to flourish for Wales and the Lions.<\/p>\n<p>John was partnered by Edwards in 23 of his Wales international appearances, plus all five Lions Tests &#8211; one against South Africa and four against New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Another star of Welsh rugby&#8217;s golden era, full-back JPR Williams, died four weeks ago.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/rugby-union\/news\/12040\/13064262\/barry-john-wales-rugby-great-dies-aged-79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wales rugby great Barry John has died at the age of 79.
