The nominees he was up against included some of the most popular and lauded rappers of the moment, including Drake, Travis Scott, Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj. A prolific rapper who won his first Grammy in 2003 for his collaboration with Outkast on the song <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=udmTfK6_aM8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Whole World,\u201d<\/a> these were Killer Mike\u2019s first Grammys as a solo artist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Details about the arrest remained unclear on Sunday. The Los Angeles Police Department <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LAPDPIO\/status\/1754362482326724994\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> that he was booked on a charge of misdemeanor battery and released after an altercation at Crypto.com Arena, the site of the awards ceremony, but declined to elaborate; he has a court date scheduled for the end of February. A representative for the rapper, born Michael Render, did not respond to requests for comment, and the Grammys directed questions to the police.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/black-atlanta-culture\/exclusive-killer-mike-talks-big-grammy-night-with-the-ajc\/FHVM4I5ZCVHD7AJ6JYMSDED7NU\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported<\/a> that, while detained on Sunday night, Killer Mike sent a text saying that \u201coverzealous security\u201d was to blame for the encounter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The rapper has a nuanced relationship with policing: He has criticized law enforcement in the past, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2020\/06\/run-the-jewels-rtj4-lyrics-protest.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rapping<\/a> about police violence and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oprah.com\/own-ownspotlight\/killer-mikes-vision-for-police-reform\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advocating<\/a> for systemic changes to policing. He has also defended the police at times, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/30\/us\/killer-mike-atlanta-protest-rapper-trnd\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">standing alongside<\/a> the Atlanta mayor and police chief at a news conference in 2020, identifying himself as the son of an Atlanta police officer as he urged protesters \u201cnot to burn your own house down\u201d when demonstrations escalated in the wake of the murder of George Floyd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday, the radio interviewers repeatedly tried to get Killer Mike to address the dramatic moment, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrissgardner\/status\/1754299537039208794?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1754299537039208794%7Ctwgr%5E4e1fdad2af5113f38102e5bfbfd7245888ea7b1b%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hollywoodreporter.com%2Fnews%2Fmusic-news%2Fkiller-mike-detained-2024-grammys-1235815271%2F\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">captured on video<\/a>, in which he was led through the arena in handcuffs, not long after he was onstage celebrating his wins for his album \u201cMichael,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/18\/arts\/music\/killer-mike-michael.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">his first solo album in more than a decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Asked by the show\u2019s host, Darian Morgan, about the incident, the rapper sidestepped what became one of the most talked-about moments of the Grammys on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe partied all night,\u201d the rapper responded. \u201cAin\u2019t nothing had happened, man. But we winners. That\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Morgan pressed him for details, laughing as Killer Mike recounted the night as if nothing particularly consequential had happened. \u201cI saw you leave and then I heard you came back,\u201d Morgan prodded, leading Killer Mike to gently change the subject. \u201cDidn\u2019t I look good? I was fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then, the show\u2019s co-host, Jazzy McBee, made another attempt, asking if he felt that the arrest had overshadowed his big Grammys night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe gone get back to the real question: How did he do it?\u201d the rapper said. \u201cThree Grammys, 30 years in the game, 48 years old.
