{"id":18822,"date":"2024-02-07T09:27:22","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T14:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/israel-chooses-a-eurovision-act-as-boycott-campaigns-swirl\/07\/02\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-02-07T09:27:22","modified_gmt":"2024-02-07T14:27:22","slug":"israel-chooses-a-eurovision-act-as-boycott-campaigns-swirl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/israel-chooses-a-eurovision-act-as-boycott-campaigns-swirl\/07\/02\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel Chooses a Eurovision Act as Boycott Campaigns Swirl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The singing contest\u2019s glitzy lights and glittering dresses were supposed to be a respite after another depressing, hostage-filled news day on Israeli TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yet a somber mood hung over the finale of \u201cRising Star,\u201d the show that selects Israel\u2019s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, as it pitted four young pop singers against one another on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This year\u2019s winner, Eden Golan, 20, dedicated her performance of \u201cI Don\u2019t Want to Miss a Thing\u201d by Aerosmith to the more than 100 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. \u201cWe won\u2019t truly be OK until everyone returns home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As the victor, Golan will travel to Malmo, Sweden, in May to represent her country in Eurovision, a high-camp spectacle watched by tens of millions and decided, in part, by a public vote. It is not an obvious proxy for war. But as the civilian death toll in Gaza has mounted, there have been growing calls for Israel to be banned from this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several prominent, artist-led campaigns argue that recent decisions to exclude Russia and Belarus set a precedent, and that Israel should be banned for human-rights violations. Eurovision officials reject those comparisons, but when Golan performs in Malmo, it seems certain that many voters will be thinking about more than just her singing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The campaign for Israel\u2019s exclusion took off in December, after Iceland\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ftt.is\/?ref=embed_page\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Association of Composers and Lyricists<\/a> published a statement on Facebook saying that Israel\u2019s aggression in Gaza made the country incompatible with an event \u201ccharacterized by joy and optimism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A petition in Iceland has garnered about 10,000 signatures \u2014 equivalent to almost 3 percent of the country\u2019s population \u2014 calling for Israel to be expelled. If Israel is allowed to take part, the petition said, Iceland should boycott the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In recent weeks, thousands of musicians in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1uNs-NjIQy-1pr9UZSSeoAD5iRmN3H5j3PotOEQp4yFE\/edit\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Norway<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vSUsH_l3-KiCJXpMwDfymlwxnIx2bCdncvQ5t5I1HfeMcPrXJsKhDQUW52MkFSpKfH9FoLaweMv74yi\/pubhtml?gid=137928822&amp;single=true&amp;urp=gmail_link\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denmark<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/euroviisuboikotti\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Finland<\/a> have signed similar letters. And <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/artistuppropet.se\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Swedish open letter<\/a>, whose signatories included the pop star Robyn, pointed out that Eurovision\u2019s organizers banned Belarus in 2021 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebu.ch\/news\/2021\/05\/ebu-executive-board-agrees-to-suspension-of-belarus-member-btrc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">over its government\u2019s suppression of media freedom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The following year, Russia was banned after it began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Allowing Russia to remain in the competition \u201cwould bring the competition into disrepute,\u201d Eurovision\u2019s organizers said at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eurovision officials say the cases of Israel and Russia are different. \u201cComparisons between wars and conflicts are complex and difficult and, as a nonpolitical media organization, not ours to make,\u201d Noel Curran, the director general of the European Broadcasting Union, which organizes the contest, said in an email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe understand the concerns and deeply held views around the current conflict in the Middle East,\u201d he said. However, he added, Eurovision is \u201cnot a contest between governments.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This is not the first time that conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has raised its head at Eurovision, which Israel first entered in 1973 and has since won four times. (Some other countries outside Europe, including Azerbaijan and Australia, also send entries to the competition.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2019, Palestinian activists called on prospective entrants to boycott the show, which was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/14\/world\/middleeast\/eurovision-israel-tel-aviv.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">taking place in Tel Aviv that year.<\/a> Nobody pulled out, but Hatari, an electro band representing Iceland, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/wiwibloggs.com\/2019\/09\/20\/icelands-ruv-fined-e5000-over-hatari-palestinian-flag-incident\/242354\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unfurled a Palestinian banner during the final<\/a>, and during a competition interlude, Madonna, a special guest, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/madonna-performs-at-eurovision-with-2-dancers-wearing-israeli-palestinian-flags\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stirred controversy<\/a> when two of her dancers wore Israeli and Palestinian flags on their backs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the debate around Israel\u2019s involvement had never been as heated as now, said Stefan Eiriksson, the director general of RUV, Iceland\u2019s public broadcaster. Eiriksson said that his country would choose its Eurovision contestant next month, also via a televised singing contest. But it will be up to the winner whether to take part in May, or to heed the call to sit this year\u2019s competition out, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among the favorites to represent Iceland is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OOKrqO_KZ\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bashar Murad, a Palestinian musician<\/a> who has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-01-28\/ty-article\/.premium\/iceland-becomes-early-eurovision-favorite-after-palestinian-singer-enters-local-contest\/0000018d-50ec-d3f3-a5ff-53fd5e840000\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drawn the ire of Israelis<\/a> after speaking out against the destruction of Gaza in a December <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/story\/palestinian-pop-star-bashar-murad-one-of-them\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview with Them<\/a>, a queer online magazine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If he is selected, Eurovision\u2019s rules will require Murad to cease making political statements, although sometimes comments about Gaza made before an act was chosen have been dug up and pored over. Bambie Thug, a singer who will represent Ireland, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/lifestyle\/artsandculture\/arid-41311864.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the Irish Examiner newspaper<\/a> before being selected that Eurovision shouldn\u2019t have one rule for Russia and another for Israel. And Olly Alexander, who will represent Britain, last year <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/voices4london.org.uk\/blog\/open-letter-queers-solidarity-palestine\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signed an open letter<\/a> that described Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza as \u201ca genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After the BBC, which chooses Britain\u2019s entry, selected Alexander in December, the nonprofit Campaign Against Antisemitism <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antisemitism\/status\/1737816580140962271?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1737816580140962271%7Ctwgr%5Ebc5f776767758cd91374d4b5b261e76005068ac4%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.euronews.com%2Fculture%2F2023%2F12%2F21%2Fbbc-urged-to-drop-uk-eurovision-entrant-olly-alexander-who-called-israel-an-apartheid-stat\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called on the broadcaster to rethink its choice<\/a>. A spokeswoman for Alexander said he was unavailable to comment, and a BBC spokeswoman reaffirmed that Alexander had signed the letter before being chosen as Britain\u2019s act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even if the conflict in Gaza has subsided by May, it will still likely play a significant role, said Dean Vuletic, who has written and edited books on Eurovision. Voters increasingly see the contest as \u201cas a forum to make political statements,\u201d he said: In 2014, they showed their support for L.G.B.T.Q. people by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/11\/austrian-singer-wins-eurovision-contest\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">voting for Conchita Wurst<\/a>, an Austrian singer and drag performer, and in 2022, voters <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=lkalush+orchestra+site%3Anytimes.com&amp;rlz=1C5GCEM_enGB993GB993&amp;oq=lkalush+orchestra+site%3Anytimes.com&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBCDc1MTZqMGo3qAIAsAIA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overwhelmingly backed Ukraine\u2019s act<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/05\/14\/arts\/eurovision-final\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kalush Orchestra<\/a>, as a sign of opposition to Russia\u2019s invasion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eurovisions fans have a range of views around the conflict in Gaza, he added, and while some will refuse to vote for Israel, others may cast votes in sympathy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yet some Israeli fans are anxious about what might happen in Malmo. Nir Harel, the president of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ogae.co.il\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OGAE Israel<\/a>, the Israeli branch of a Eurovision fan club network, said in an interview that the furor around his country\u2019s participation was \u201cfrustrating and disappointing,\u201d especially because \u201cEurovision is a bubble \u2014 a friendly bubble \u2014 and politics should not enter it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In May, Harel said, he expected the audience to boo Israel\u2019s entrant. \u201cOf course we\u2019re worried about that,\u201d Harel said, adding that he also expected many Eurovision fans not to vote for the Israeli entry, no matter how good Golan\u2019s song was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nevertheless, he said he would be there in Malmo along with other members of his club. \u201cWe already have our tickets,\u201d Harel said. \u201cWhen we land in Malmo, we\u2019re Eurovision fans,\u201d he added: \u201cWe\u2019re there as fans of the Israeli contestant, not as fans of Israel\u2019s government.
