{"id":18930,"date":"2024-02-07T22:44:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T03:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/sport\/what-are-the-nfls-gambling-rules-for-the-super-bowl-in-las-vegas\/07\/02\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-02-07T22:44:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-08T03:44:00","slug":"what-are-the-nfls-gambling-rules-for-the-super-bowl-in-las-vegas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/sport\/what-are-the-nfls-gambling-rules-for-the-super-bowl-in-las-vegas\/07\/02\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"What are the NFL\u2019s gambling rules for the Super Bowl in Las Vegas?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"2\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/nfl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NFL<\/a>\u2019s rules on gambling have generated widespread criticism and questions leading up to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, as the league aims to balance its sportsbook partnerships and policies preventing players from betting on games.<\/p>\n<p>Gambling was a major topic of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5253590\/2024\/02\/05\/roger-goodell-super-bowl-news-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Super Bowl news conference<\/a> Monday, when he said the \u201cintegrity of the league\u201d was the top priority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure that when people are watching NFL games, they know the action on the field is genuine and without any outside influence, \u201d Goodell said.<\/p>\n<p>With the marquee sports event days away in the U.S. betting hub, it\u2019s worth revisiting the NFL\u2019s policies for its players and how the league\u2019s stance has changed over time.<\/p>\n<h2>NFL rules on sports betting<\/h2>\n<p>The league has long maintained that players are not allowed to bet on NFL events. Its 2023 gambling policy states that players can never place, solicit or facilitate a bet \u2014 either directly or through a third party \u2014 on \u201cany NFL game, practice, or other event, such as the Combine or Draft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Players are also not allowed to participate in anyone else\u2019s NFL betting activities, such as asking someone to place an NFL-related bet on their behalf or allowing another person to use their account to place an NFL-related bet.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, players may not enter a sportsbook during the NFL season (from the Hall of Fame Game through the Super Bowl) \u201cexcept to access an area outside of a sportsbook,\u201d the rules state. For example, a player can pass through a sportsbook \u201cwhere necessary\u201d to get to a separate part of an entertainment, casino or hotel complex.<\/p>\n<p>At the Super Bowl, the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"46\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/nfl\/team\/chiefs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kansas City Chiefs<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"58\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/nfl\/team\/niners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a> are both staying in Lake Las Vegas, about 25 miles east of the Strip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5241988\/2024\/02\/06\/super-bowl-lake-las-vegas-chiefs-49ers\/\" class=\"go-deeper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">Why the Chiefs and 49ers are staying in Lake Las Vegas, not on The Strip<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The league\u2019s rules are also particular about when and where players may\u00a0gamble.<\/p>\n<p>Players are prohibited from gambling in team or league facilities (such as practice facilities, stadiums and offices) or while traveling with their teams (such as on a team plane or in a team hotel) to participate in an NFL game or in-season team activity.<\/p>\n<h2>Can NFL players bet on other sports?<\/h2>\n<p>Players are allowed to bet on sports other than the NFL in states where betting is legal, subject to the NFL\u2019s rules on entering a sportsbook and betting from the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a player may not place a bet from an NFL facility even if the bet is not on an NFL game. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"41\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/nfl\/team\/lions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Detroit Lions<\/a> receiver <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"gwmcH6DayIPwgbFw\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/nfl\/player\/jameson-williams-gwmcH6DayIPwgbFw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jameson Williams<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"61\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/nfl\/team\/titans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tennessee Titans<\/a> offensive tackle <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"bBz4IdUbiZfZu1CB\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/nfl\/player\/nicholas-petit-frere-bBz4IdUbiZfZu1CB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Nicholas Petit-Frere<\/a> were disciplined this season for violating the rule. They originally received six-game suspensions, but the league <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/4913789\/2023\/09\/29\/nfl-gambling-policy-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">updated its gambling policy in September<\/a>, reducing the penalty from six games to four.<\/p>\n<p>Betting on non-NFL events in the workplace or while working now carries a two-game suspension for the first violation, six games for a second offense and at least one year for a third offense.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the gambling rules for the Super Bowl?<\/h2>\n<p>Members of the two Super Bowl teams, the Chiefs and 49ers, are prohibited from participating in any form of gambling, including casino games and betting on any sport.<\/p>\n<p>Players on the other 30 teams may engage in \u201clegal gambling\u201d \u2014 but not on the NFL, and they cannot go in a sportsbook until the Super Bowl is over, the league said.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Miller, the NFL executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5238953\/2024\/01\/30\/nfl-super-bowl-sports-betting-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said last week<\/a>: \u201cThe rules are no different for the participating teams\u2019 players and other personnel as they would be for any other game: When on business, there is no gambling, whether it be sports gambling or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd any player, coach, personnel, yours truly, who would be caught or identified gambling at a casino would be eligible for the disciplinary process, and that would be addressed in the normal course of discipline as we would any player or other personnel who there was evidence that was violating the rules around gambling.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>NFL\u2019s disciplinary process for gambling violations<\/h2>\n<p>Violations of the NFL\u2019s gambling policy are decided by Goodell or his designee on a case-by-case basis, according to the 2023 rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiscipline may include, without limitation, a fine, suspension, termination of employment and\/or banishment from the NFL for life,\u201d the rules state.<\/p>\n<p>Below are the baseline suspensions for violations of the gambling policy, \u201cwith possible upward or downward adjustments,\u201d according to the rules, which note: \u201cNothing in this policy precludes the commissioner from imposing more discipline for other types of prohibited conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Betting on NFL:<\/strong> Indefinite suspension, minimum of one year or minimum of two years if a player bets on an NFL game involving his team<\/li>\n<li><strong>Actual or attempted game fixing:<\/strong> Permanent banishment from the NFL<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inside information and tipping:<\/strong> Indefinite suspension, minimum of one year<\/li>\n<li><strong>Third-party or proxy betting:<\/strong> Indefinite suspension, minimum of one year<\/li>\n<li><strong>Betting (other than NFL) in the workplace or while working:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>First violation: Two-game suspension without pay<\/li>\n<li>Second violation: Six-game suspension without pay<\/li>\n<li>Third violation: Suspension without pay for at least one year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How has the NFL\u2019s stance on gambling changed?<\/h2>\n<p><em>The Athletic<\/em>\u2019s Mike Jones explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5238953\/2024\/01\/30\/nfl-super-bowl-sports-betting-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recent article<\/a> how the NFL\u2019s complicated relationship with sports betting has evolved:<\/p>\n<p><em>Since the legalization of sports gambling, the NFL has worked hard to walk a tightrope when it comes to partnering with companies such as Caesars, FanDuel and DraftKings and also ensuring that players avoid activities that would compromise the integrity of the game. The league has yet to release figures on how much revenue partnerships with gambling companies generate, but according to the American Gaming Association (AGA), the NFL brings in $2.3 billion per year in income because of those deals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>League officials long frowned upon betting on NFL games and worried that involvement would lead to player involvement and questions about the temptation to fix games. But once the Supreme Court in 2018 overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, they felt the need to evolve as well.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe relationship that the league has with sports gambling changed for one specific reason, and that is because the world changed,\u201d Miller said on the league\u2019s efforts to promote responsible sports betting practices. \u201cThe Supreme Court overturned (the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) back in 2018, five years and some odd months ago.
