{"id":19818,"date":"2024-02-13T01:50:48","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T06:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/oscar-nominees-luncheon-2024-best-looks-and-the-anatomy-of-a-fall-dog\/13\/02\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-02-13T01:50:48","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T06:50:48","slug":"oscar-nominees-luncheon-2024-best-looks-and-the-anatomy-of-a-fall-dog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/oscar-nominees-luncheon-2024-best-looks-and-the-anatomy-of-a-fall-dog\/13\/02\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar Nominees Luncheon 2024: Best Looks and the \u2018Anatomy of a Fall\u2019 Dog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the annual Oscar nominees luncheon, there is always a top dog that even a ballroom full of A-listers will clamor to meet. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/13\/movies\/oscar-nominees-luncheon-photos.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Last year<\/a>, that honor went to the \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d producer Tom Cruise, a star so huge that the other nominees began to orbit him, biding time until they could dart in to kiss the ring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The luncheon held Monday afternoon at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., initially seemed to lack that supernova presence, even though there were plenty of famous names including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/11\/movies\/robert-downey-jr-christopher-nolan-oppenheimer.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Robert Downey Jr.<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/29\/movies\/emma-stone-yorgos-lanthimos-poor-things.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Emma Stone<\/a> and Martin Scorsese. Still, they\u2019ve all grown too used to each other to engage in much genuflection: When you treat an awards campaign like a full-time job, the other contenders might as well be your co-workers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Was there anyone who could jump-start this starry but sleepy scene? I didn\u2019t think so, until I saw supporting actress nominee <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/01\/movies\/america-ferrera-barbie.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">America Ferrera<\/a> turn to her left, look down and gasp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOh my God!\u201d she exclaimed. \u201cIt\u2019s the actor dog!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At her feet was Messi, the beautiful black-and-white Border collie from the French courtroom drama \u201cAnatomy of a Fall.\u201d I gasped, too, and not just because I\u2019m a dog person: This was Messi\u2019s first big awards-season appearance, though his star has risen on social media for a performance on par with some of the nominated humans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As Snoop, the family pet who witnesses the disputed death at the heart of \u201cAnatomy of a Fall,\u201d 7-year-old Messi does things you wouldn\u2019t believe a canine thespian is capable of, including a fakeout death scene executed with unnerving aplomb. At the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/27\/movies\/cannes-palme-dor-winner-anatomy-of-a-fall.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cannes Film Festival<\/a>, where \u201cAnatomy of a Fall\u201d won the prestigious Palme d\u2019Or, Messi was even awarded the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/palm-dog-2023-anatomy-of-a-fall-cannes-border-collie-messi-1235500571\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palm Dog<\/a>. What more could a pooch want, besides treats?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though I\u2019ve been to plenty of awards-season events where stars were kept on tight leashes by their handlers, this luncheon was the first time it was not metaphorical. \u201cCan I say hi?\u201d Ferrera asked Messi\u2019s owner and trainer, Laura Martin Contini.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPlease!\u201d said Contini.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ferrera knelt beside Messi and stroked his head. \u201cYou did a fabulous job,\u201d she told the dog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Staring back at us with a pair of compellingly humanlike blue eyes, Messi happily accepted praise and neck rubs from Ferrera, whose \u201cBarbie\u201d colleagues proved similarly beguiled. Billie Eilish, nominated for her \u201cBarbie\u201d song \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cW8VLC9nnTo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What Was I Made For?,<\/a>\u201d set her Gucci bag on the floor to scratch Messi beneath his chin. Later, when <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/13\/movies\/margot-robbie-ryan-gosling-barbie.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ryan Gosling<\/a> was introduced to the dog, the supporting actor nominee put a hand to his heart and walked away for a moment, overcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For once, the luncheon\u2019s top dog was an actual dog. \u201cIt\u2019s crazy,\u201d mused the \u201cAnatomy of a Fall\u201d director Justine Triet. \u201cI think he\u2019s much more famous here than in France.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Navigating the Hollywood scene for the first time, Messi handled the room like a pro, politely accepting hugs from anyone who walked past. Despite the fact that he was wearing a blue bow tie and nothing else \u2014 an awards look even Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet would find too daunting to attempt \u2014 Messi proved well-behaved, at least until Contini offered me a toy bone emblazoned with the Beverly Hilton logo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Messi, who had been scanning the room for more people to pet him, suddenly locked on to that toy bone with laser focus. It was as though I had dangled a best director nomination in front of Bradley Cooper, and all the other noise in the room fell away as Messi willed me to play fetch with him. \u201cAre you sure?\u201d I asked. The damn dog nodded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I tossed the bone and Messi leaped to the left, catching it in midair and nearly colliding with a scrum of Champagne drinkers. Suffice it to say, this wasn\u2019t the sort of scene you get with Meryl Streep.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though Messi proved to be the luncheon\u2019s biggest draw, the event has always been designed to encourage unusual connections, throwing together nominated actors, behind-the-scenes technicians and documentary subjects for an electric, egalitarian afternoon. In one corner of the room, I met the director Sean Wang, nominated for the documentary short \u201cNai Nai &amp; Wai Po,\u201d about his elderly grandmothers, Chang Li Hua and Yi Yan Fuei. Both women had come with Wang to the luncheon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI can\u2019t even express how happy I am to think that my grandson could be somewhere like this,\u201d said Yi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Raney Aronson-Rath, who produced the nominated documentary \u201c20 Days in Mariupol,\u201d told me she had ventured out of her comfort zone to request a photo with the \u201cBarbie\u201d star Margot Robbie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy daughter now literally thinks I walk on water because I was able to get a picture with her,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Robbie received one of the afternoon\u2019s biggest rounds of applause, when she was summoned to the risers at the front of the room to pose for a class photo with her fellow nominees. A contender for producing \u201cBarbie,\u201d Robbie was still dealt a headline-making snub when she failed to crack the best actress lineup. A similar surge of enthusiastic applause greeted Greta Gerwig, who received an adapted-screenplay nomination but was squeezed out of the best director category.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As the nominees assembled and the photo was taken, I checked in with Messi, who had settled in at a back table next to Contini as she noshed on vegan scallops. Wiped out from all the attention, Messi had spent the last 20 minutes drifting in and out of sleep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tom Quinn, whose studio Neon distributed \u201cAnatomy of a Fall,\u201d sat down on the steps beside Messi, silently administering scratches and a shoulder massage.
