The &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/nextshark.com\/japanese-women-give-male-co-workers-chocolate-valentines-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:giri choco;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">giri choco<\/a>&#8221; tradition, which means &#8220;obligation chocolate,&#8221; is considered a polite gesture and not romantic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What the figures show: <\/b>The <span>online poll conducted by Tokyo-based career consulting firm Laibo Inc., which surveyed over 500 Japanese people in their 20s to 50s, <\/span><span>found that only 10.7% expressed willingness to give obligatory chocolates to coworkers this <a href=\"https:\/\/nextshark.com\/tag\/valentines-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Valentine\u2019s Day;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Valentine\u2019s Day<\/a>, reported <a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20240214\/p2a\/00m\/0na\/005000c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Mainichi;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Mainichi<\/a>. <\/span><span>In 2019, 14.4% of respondents reported giving gifts, declining to 7.9% in 2020, 6.9% in 2021, 7.9% in 2022 and 4.8% in 2023. While this year saw a slight increase, it is still significantly lower than before the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reasons for the decline: <\/b><span>Nearly 40% of respondents cited both the cost and effort required as reasons for not participating in the tradition. Meanwhile, around 80% of respondents said the rising cost of consumer prices affected their willingness to give and receive gifts. He also highlighted the shift to remote work during the pandemic, which has altered traditional workplace interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rise of self-love:<\/strong> Meanwhile, a separate survey by Japanese marketing firm Intage Inc. found that 21.7% of women plan to purchase chocolates for themselves, marking a significant increase from the previous year of just 13.2%, reported <a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2024\/02\/39341f4a1ec4-more-japan-women-buying-valentines-day-chocolates-for-themselves.html?phrase=Fukui&amp;words=\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kyodo News;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Kyodo News<\/a>.
