{"id":20311,"date":"2024-02-16T00:54:35","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T05:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/the-islamic-state-group-poses-rising-threat-in-africa-despite-progress-un-experts-say\/16\/02\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-02-16T00:54:35","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T05:54:35","slug":"the-islamic-state-group-poses-rising-threat-in-africa-despite-progress-un-experts-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/the-islamic-state-group-poses-rising-threat-in-africa-despite-progress-un-experts-say\/16\/02\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"The Islamic State group poses rising threat in Africa despite progress, UN experts say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>UNITED NATIONS (AP) \u2014 The Islamic State extremist group poses a rising threat amid political instability in West Africa and the Sahel and remains intent on carrying out attacks abroad, the U.N. counter-terrorism chief said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Vladimir Voronkov reiterated U.N. findings that IS continues to pose a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/istanbul-church-attack-islamic-state-18ba89071eb86cd455554cd20187d190\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:threat to international peace;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">threat to international peace<\/a> and security, especially in conflict zones, despite significant progress by U.N. member nations in countering the threat. The group has also increased operations in its former <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/islamic-state-fighters-syria-iraq-875d5ee8a0978f3b28aeec210b33cd5f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:strongholds in Iraq and Syria;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">strongholds in Iraq and Syria<\/a> as well as Southeast Asia, Voronkov said.<\/p>\n<p>Voronkov told the U.N. Security Council that in West Africa and the Sahel, a broad region cutting across the continent, the situation has deteriorated \u201cand is becoming more complex,\u201d as local ethnic and regional disputes cross with the agenda and operations of the extremist group, which is also known by its Arabic name Daesh, and its affiliates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaesh affiliates continued to operate with increasingly more autonomy from the Daesh core,\u201d he said, warning that if this trend persists there is a risk \u201cthat a vast area of instability may emerge from Mali to the borders of Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalia Gherman, executive director of the U.N. Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate, said: \u201cThey are exploiting the political instability and expanding their radius of influence, their operations and territorial control in the Sahel, with growing concerns for coastal West Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe African continent now accounts for almost half of terrorist acts worldwide, with central Sahel accounting for about 25% of such attacks,\u201d she told the council.<\/p>\n<p>Voronkov, who heads the U.N. Office of Counter-Terrorism, said countering the threat of terrorism in Africa remains a priority for his office.<\/p>\n<p>Gherman said that \u201cenduring challenges persist in the Middle East and Southeast and Central Asia, with indications that Daesh is attempting to resurge in those sub-regions as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Islamic State group broke away from al-Qaida over a decade ago and attracted supporters from around the world. Despite its defeat in Iraq in 2017 and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-islamic-state-barracks-attack-7936096cde14354ab9ed1c750b42f26f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:in Syria;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">in Syria <\/a> two years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/al-qaida-islamic-state-terrorist-threats-africa-afghanistan-162c899b2ed71c7be1724eb03ece772b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:U.N. experts said last month;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">U.N. experts said last month<\/a> that there are still between 3,000 and 5,000 fighters.
