Rica for their projects tackling climate change, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ithacarotary.com\/Stories\/ithaca-rotary-club-awards-two-grants-for-international-climate-change-projects\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to a Friday statement from the club;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to a Friday statement from the club<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sciencecentrekenya.wixsite.com\/sciencecentre\/about\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Science Centre Kenya;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Science Centre Kenya<\/a> used the grant to plant 1,250 fruit trees at 10 school and teach nearly 2,500 children about agriculture and climate change, helping to alleviate increasing food insecurity in the western part of the country.<\/p>\n<p>In Costa Rica, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marioninstitute.org\/mastate-charitable-foundation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mastate Charitable Foundation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mastate Charitable Foundation<\/a> is developing a family-run fruit tree and vegetable farm that demonstrates a new model for food production in the region, set apart by a reduced reliance on agricultural chemicals and an aim to draw carbon from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div Ithaca Rotary Club.<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Kenya project<\/h2>\n<p>Charlie Trautmann, former director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencenter.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sciencenter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sciencenter<\/a> in Ithaca, , helped develop the application for the project in Kenya with Kenneth Monjero, director of the Science Centre Kenya, whom he met at a conference in South Africa a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Monjero said he leveraged the grant awarded by the rotary to mobilize parents of children at Kenyan schools to donate an additional 1,250 trees, bringing the total number planted to 2,500.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wouldn\u2019t have happened without the Rotary funding,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cIt ignited the interest and now the students understand what climate change is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The carbon dioxide that will be captured by the trees is the equivalent of the greenhouse gases emitted by 25 cars a year, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not thousands of cars, but it\u2019s something,\u201d Trautmann said. \u201cThe more important aspect is that children will be learning about the environment and taking care of the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trees will take three to six years to harvest and will provide up to 25 years of fruit production. O\u2019Hara and his wife moved to Costa Rica 22 years ago and started <a href=\"https:\/\/ranchomastatal.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Rancho Mastatal;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Rancho Mastatal<\/a>, which offers workshops on permaculture design, conservation, sustainable food production and natural building.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Hara said Costa Rica is losing its food security and degrading its farmland by using more agricultural chemicals per capital than any other country on earth.
