In Somalia, a pregnant woman died this month after her husband allegedly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/BooliiskaSoomaaliya\/posts\/pfbid0GiSsGK8AmawCmmfYPxJ9WwzUUMz4MBdC8Dz1dAjTF8BXkgasrHzJ9jYhW77esx1Hl\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set her on fire<\/a>. In the West African nation of Cameroon, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/fr\/news\/2024\/02\/01\/le-moment-metoo-du-cameroun\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a powerful businessman<\/a> was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/cameroon-businessman-held-for-great-number-of-rapes-f63a5f1e\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested<\/a> in January on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ajplusfrancais\/status\/1752298825866199086\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accusations, which he has denied, of brutalizing dozens of women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The upsurge in killings is part of a broader pattern that got worse during economic hard times and pandemic lockdowns, human rights activists say. An estimated 20,000 gender-related killings of women were recorded in Africa in 2022, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-11\/gender-related-killings-of-women-and-girls-femicide-feminicide-global-estimates-2022-en.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">highest rate in the world<\/a>, according to the U.N. Experts believe the true figures are likely higher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe problem is the normalization of gender-based violence and the rhetoric that, yes, women are disposable,\u201d said Njeri wa Migwi, the co-founder of Usikimye \u2014 Swahili for \u201cDon\u2019t be silent\u201d \u2014 a Kenyan nonprofit working with victims of gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The feminist scholar <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/06\/obituaries\/diana-russell-dead.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Diana Russell<\/a> popularized the term femicide \u2014 the killing of women or girls because of their gender \u2014 to create a category that distinguishes it from other homicides. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/data.unwomen.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/Publications\/CEGS\/Statistical_framework_femicide_2022.pdf#page=11\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According to a report by the United Nations<\/a>, the killings are often carried out by male partners or close family members and are preceded by physical, emotional and sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Critics say that many African leaders, as well as police, ignore or downplay the problem, or even <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.digital\/news\/senator-mutinda-blames-rising-murders-of-young-women-on-obsession-for-money-n335014\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blame victims<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On a recent afternoon, Ms. Migwi, the nonprofit co-founder, was leading a training session for girls and women when she was suddenly called to a nearby home in Kayole, a low-income, high-crime neighborhood east of Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Inside the dimly lit house, Jacinta Ayuma, a day laborer and mother of two, lay lifeless, bloody bruises visible on her face, neck and left arm. The police said she was killed by her partner. He fled, and they have yet to arrest him. An autopsy showed she died from blunt force trauma that resulted in multiple organ injuries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Wails of anguish rang in the air as several officers carried the body into a police van using a thin duvet. Three neighbors said they had heard someone screaming for help throughout the night, until about 6 a.m. But they said they did not intervene or call the police because the sounds of beatings and distress were commonplace, and they considered it a private matter. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Migwi, back in her office nearby, said she had seen too many similar cases. \u201cI am mourning,\u201d she said, her head in her hands. \u201cThere\u2019s a helplessness that comes with all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To coincide with Valentine\u2019s Day, women\u2019s rights campaigners in Kenya organized a vigil they called \u201cDark Valentine\u201d in the capital to commemorate the women who have been killed. At least 500 women have been victims of femicide in Kenya between 2016 and 2023, according to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/femicide.africauncensored.online\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a recent report<\/a> by the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.africadatahub.org\/about\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Africa Data Hub<\/a>, a group of data organizations working with journalists in several African countries that analyzed cases reported in Kenyan news media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">About 300 people donning black T-shirts waved red roses, lit red candles and observed a minute of silence. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhy should we have to keep reminding people that women need to be alive,\u201d said Zaha Indimuli, a co-organizer of the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among the women whose name was read at the vigil was Grace Wangari Thuiya, a 24-year-old beautician who was killed in Nairobi in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Two days before her death, Ms. Thuiya visited her mother in Murang\u2019a County, about 35 miles northeast of Nairobi. During the visit, her mother, Susan Wairimu Thuiya, said they had spoken about a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nation.africa\/kenya\/news\/how-varsity-student-rita-waeni-was-lured-to-her-gruesome-death--4495478\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20-year-old college student<\/a> who was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.digital\/news\/rita-waeni-murder-family-identifies-decapitated-head-recovered-in-kiambu-as-cause-of-death-revealed-n335516\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dismembered<\/a> just days before and what seemed like an epidemic of violence against women.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Thuiya cautioned her daughter, whom she described as ambitious and jovial, to be careful in her dating choices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cFear was gripping my heart that day,\u201d Ms. Thuiya said of their last encounter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Two days later, the police called Ms. Thuiya to inform her that her daughter had died after her boyfriend assaulted and repeatedly stabbed her. Ms. Thuiya said her daughter had never revealed that she was seeing someone. The police said they arrested a man in the apartment where Grace Thuiya was killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is all a bad dream that I want to wake up from,\u201d Ms. Thuiya said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Thuiya\u2019s killing, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DCI_Kenya\/status\/1744043116628238650\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">among others<\/a>, sparked large-scale protests across Kenya in late January. In recent years, anti-femicide protests had broken out in Kenya over the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/24\/world\/africa\/agnes-jebet-tirop-stabbing-arrest.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">killing of female Olympic athletes<\/a>, and also in other African nations, including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/sep\/05\/thousands-protest-in-south-africa-over-rising-violence-against-women\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Africa<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/nigerian-women-protest-port-harcourt-killings\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nigeria<\/a> and Uganda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Activists say the demonstrations were among the largest nonpolitical protests in Kenya\u2019s history: At least 10,000 women and men crowded the streets of Nairobi alone, with thousands more joining in other cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At a time of rising anti-gay sentiments, the protests were also intended to highlight <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2022\/04\/29\/inadequate-kenyan-police-response-brutal-killing-non-binary-lesbian\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the violence facing nonbinary<\/a>, queer and transgender women, said Marylize Biubwa, a Kenyan queer activist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The movement has generated a backlash, especially online, from men who argue that a woman\u2019s clothing or choices justified abuse. Such comments are disseminated with hashtags like #StopKillingMen and by social media influencers like Andrew Kibe, a men\u2019s rights champion and former radio presenter whose YouTube account was shut down last year for violating the company\u2019s terms of service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShut up,\u201d he said in a recent video, referring to those outraged over the killings of women. \u201cYou have no right to have an opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Activists say they don\u2019t see enough outrage from political,<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>ethnic or religious leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Kenya, President William Ruto has come under criticism for not personally addressing femicide. A spokesman with his office did not respond to requests for comment. But following the protests, his government <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DCI_Kenya\/status\/1752303015162179626\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vowed<\/a> to expedite investigations and introduced a toll-free number for the public to report perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, in Kenya and across Africa, campaigners say more investigators need to be hired, judges need to decide cases more quickly and legislatures should pass laws to punish perpetrators more severely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Data collection and research on femicide needs to be funded, said Patricia Andago, a researcher at the data firm Odipo Dev.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For now, the killings continue to leave a trail of devastation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On a recent afternoon, Ms. Thuiya, whose 24-year-old daughter was killed in January, sat cuddling her two granddaughters, 5-year-old Keisha and 22-month-old Milan. She said that Keisha believed her mother ascended \u201cto the sky\u201d and asked if she could get a ladder to follow her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was very painful,\u201d Ms. Thuiya said about hearing her granddaughter\u2019s questions. \u201cI just want justice for my daughter.
