Credit &#8211; Getty Images\/iStock <\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">S<\/span>ome 24.5% of South Koreans aged 70 and above were still working as of January, local media <a href=\"https:\/\/m.yna.co.kr\/view\/MYH20240219005900641\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reported<\/a> Monday, as officials increasingly look to keep more elderly in the workforce to address a demographic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Elderly employment figures <a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/news\/2023-10-22\/business\/economy\/Older-Koreans-flock-to-work-as-labor-shortage-solution\/1895042\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:have seen a steady increase;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">have seen a steady increase<\/a> since the country\u2019s statistics authority started to collect the data in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Among these workers, half of whom are aged 75 and above, 42.1% are considered \u201csimple laborers\u201d by authorities, referring to workers with jobs that are not specialized and require just a few hours of training. Some 30% of them are working in the agriculture, fishing, and forestry industry, while 22.8% work in the social affairs and service industry.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea is projected to become the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20220905004400320\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:world\u2019s most aged by 2044;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">world\u2019s most aged by 2044<\/a> and the number of people in their 70s exceeded those in their 20s for the first time ever last year. Authorities are scrambling to address the country\u2019s aging population, including efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6270853\/south-korea-reclusive-children-cash-handout\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:encourage employment among youth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">encourage employment among youth<\/a> as well as the elderly and boost <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6488894\/south-korea-low-fertility-rate-trend-decline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:low fertility rates;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">low fertility rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To entice couples to grow bigger families, the South Korean government has even mulled <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6265842\/south-korea-birth-rate-military-service-exemption\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:granting military exemption;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">granting military exemption<\/a> to men who have three or more babies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6208211\/south-korea-military-service-draft-conscription-conscientious-objector\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Inside South Korea\u2019s Harsh Alternative to Military Service;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Inside South Korea\u2019s Harsh Alternative to Military Service<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An aging population comes has wideranging effects, including <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4356425\/aging-population\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:increased healthcare and welfare costs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">increased healthcare and welfare costs<\/a>. The country\u2019s retirement age of 60\u2014already raised from 58 in 2017\u2014was first set at a time when life expectancies were shorter. Longer life spans today\u2014and consequently longer time spent in retirement without income\u2014have sparked economic fears within both the workforce and government. Labor unions in the country are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/labour-unions-push-raise-retirement-age-greying-south-korea-2023-08-29\/#:~:text=While%20South%20Korean%20law%20sets,replaces%20a%20fraction%20of%20wages.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:urging companies to raise the retirement age again;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">urging companies to raise the retirement age again<\/a> so workers can earn wages for a few more years.<\/p>\n<p>South Korean authorities are welcoming the growing number of elderly workers as a solution to labor shortages caused by the demographic shift\u2014a problem faced by several economies around Asia.<\/p>\n<p>In neighboring Japan, which has found itself in the throes of an even bigger demographic crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stat.go.jp\/data\/topics\/topi1380.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:one in every 10 people is aged 80 or older;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">one in every 10 people is aged 80 or older<\/a>\u2014making it the country with the highest proportion of elderly in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Those aged 65 and older accounted for 13.6% of Japan\u2019s workforce in 2022. Japan\u2019s Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6278122\/fumio-kishida-japan-prime-minister-interview-g7\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fumio Kishida;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Fumio Kishida<\/a> warned last year that the country was<a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2023\/01\/caa2f6e816dc-pm-warns-japan-on-brink-of-social-dysfunction-amid-falling-birthrate.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201con the brink\u201d of social dysfunction;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> \u201con the brink\u201d of social dysfunction<\/a> over the demographic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>China, which is considered a \u201csuper-aged society\u201d by the World Bank, has also been trying to get more seniors working. People over 60 account for about 20% of China\u2019s population and make up 8.8% of its workforce.<\/p>\n<p>As China\u2019s state media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3222204\/china-population-re-employment-elderly-urgent-realistic-problem-be-solved\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:calls on retirees to re-enter the workforce;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">calls on retirees to re-enter the workforce<\/a>, there are also discussions of raising the country\u2019s mandatory retirement age, which is among the youngest in the world. Last month, Beijing released a <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6555949\/china-silver-economy-aging-population-plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:silver economy plan;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">silver economy plan<\/a> promising to reorient its economy around the expanding elderly population, including investments in elderly products and services.<\/p>\n<p>In Singapore, set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/singapore\/ageing-singapore-can-stay-economically-vibrant-growing-workforce-productivity-ong-ye-kung\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:become \u201csuper-aged\u201d by 2026;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">become \u201csuper-aged\u201d by 2026<\/a>, authorities are looking at further incentives to get more seniors in the workforce.
