report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-meta\">\n<ul class=\"authors\">\n<li class=\"mugshot-shown\">\n<div class=\"author-img\"><\/div>\n<p>Laurence Edmondson, F1 Editor<span class=\"timestamp \">Mar 4, 2024, 06:33 PM<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"author-overlay\"><a class=\"icon-font-after icon-close-solid-after\" href=\"#\">Close<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\u2022\u00a0Joined ESPN in 2009<br \/>\u2022\u00a0An FIA accredited F1 journalist since 2011<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is reportedly under investigation by the organisation he leads after a whistleblower alleged he interfered with the result of last year&#8217;s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/formula1\/68465516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">BBC Sport<\/a>, a report has been submitted by an FIA compliance officer to the governing body&#8217;s ethics committee that alleges Ben Sulayem intervened to overturn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/35904204\/how-fernando-alonso-escaped-fia-penalty-regained-saudi-gp-podium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a penalty given to Aston Martin&#8217;s Fernando Alonso.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/34296466\/unlapped-how-listen-watch-espn-new-f1-show-episode-archive-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Unlapped: How to listen or watch ESPN&#8217;s new F1 show, episode archive, and more<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ESPN has contacted the FIA for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation relates to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/35898208\/fernando-alonso-reinstated-third-farcical-fia-penalty-reversal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">10-second penalty given to Alonso<\/a> at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix that initially dropped him from third place to fourth after the chequered flag but was overturned several hours later.<\/p>\n<p>The penalty was issued after Alonso&#8217;s Aston Martin team was judged to have carried out work on his car as he served a separate five-second penalty for being out of position in his grid box at the start of the race.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline inline-photo full\">\n<figure><picture><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/a3.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2023%2F1011%2Fr1236952_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg&amp;w=570&amp;format=jpg, https:\/\/a3.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2023%2F1011%2Fr1236952_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg&amp;w=1140&amp;cquality=40&amp;format=jpg 2x\" media=\"(min-width: 376px)\"><source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/a3.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2023%2F1011%2Fr1236952_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg&amp;w=375, https:\/\/a3.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2023%2F1011%2Fr1236952_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg&amp;w=750&amp;cquality=40&amp;format=jpg 2x\" media=\"(max-width: 375px)\"><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"photoCaption\">Mohammed Ben Sulayem is reportedly under investigation.\u00a0<cite>Getty<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The ten-second penalty was issued shortly after Alonso had received his third-place trophy on the podium and dropped him to fourth in the classification.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for penalty centred around video footage that showed the rear jack &#8212;
