She was 72.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her death was confirmed by Brown Johnson, a longtime friend and the creator of Nick Jr., who said the cause was breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In \u201cThe Backyardigans,\u201d five cartoon animals \u2014 Tyrone, Tasha, Pablo, Austin and Uniqua \u2014 imagine their backyard as a place of adventure, traversing deserts, oceans, jungles, rivers and outer space while dancing and singing to music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With the series, Ms. Burgess hoped to help children use their imaginations to have fun. In 2004, Ms. Burgess said in an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/24\/arts\/television\/for-young-viewers-a-childs-garden-of-versatility.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">interview with The New York Times<\/a> that the idea for the show stemmed from memories of playing in her own childhood backyard in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI really remember it as a wonderful, happy, safe place,\u201d she said. \u201cYou could have these great adventures just romping around. From there, you could go anywhere or do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The series became a favorite of American preschoolers after it premiered on Nickelodeon in 2004. It was adapted into a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLpDBETf939pUYQ738aOYk8Z3DwM4Mzot0\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">live show<\/a>, \u201cThe Backyardigans Live! Tale of the Mighty Knights,\u201d in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2021, several \u201cBackyardigans\u201d songs, including \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2ihrWaUxtYQ\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Into the Thick of It!<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Bn0n6sjSOFo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Castaways<\/a>,\u201d found a large and nostalgic audience on TikTok, years after their original release in 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cJanice really taught me about representation in kids\u2019 media and how important it was for kids to not only see themselves, but hear themselves,\u201d Ms. Johnson said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Burgess made sure to cast children of color, and the roles were recast every few years as their voices changed, Ms. Johnson said. Ms. Burgess wanted their voices to sound natural and \u201cnot Broadway,\u201d she said. Ms. Burgess, a music lover, included 80 distinct musical genres in \u201cThe Backyardigans,\u201d Ms. Johnson added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was like writing a musical every week,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The music was composed by Evan Lurie, who said in an interview that Ms. Burgess\u2019s \u201cability to cut to the meat of what needed to be done was just astonishing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Janice Burgess was born on March 1, 1952, to John Wesley Burgess and Alma Naomi (Thomas) Burgess. She grew up in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh and attended the Ellis School, a girls\u2019 college preparatory school. She graduated from Brandeis University in 1974, according to the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/about\/alumni.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">university\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She worked at WQED, the public television station in Pittsburgh, and Sesame Workshop before joining Nick Jr. in 1995. Working at Nick Jr. taught her everything she needed to know about creating a television show for young children, she said at a National Press Club <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?193206-1\/diversity-childrens-television-programming#!\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">luncheon in 2006<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At Nick Jr., she oversaw the production of \u201cBlue\u2019s Clues\u201d and \u201cLittle Bill,\u201d which went on to win Peabody and Emmy Awards. She won a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/m.imdb.com\/name\/nm1333355\/awards\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2008 Daytime Emmy Award<\/a> for outstanding special class animated program for her work on \u201cThe Backyardigans.\u201d In a statement, Nickelodeon called Ms. Burgess \u201cone of the great architects of Nick Jr.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Burgess is survived by her mother and a brother, Jack Burgess.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Burgess <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151130054750\/https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/ae\/tv\/2006\/10\/08\/Q-A-with-Janice-Burgess\/stories\/200610080230\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette<\/a> in 2006 that she drew on action movies like \u201cDie Hard\u201d and the \u201cStar Wars\u201d and \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d series to create \u201cThe Backyardigans,\u201d toning down the thrilling high-stakes narratives to a level that was appropriate for preschoolers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m really quite a refined person, but there\u2019s nothing I like more than cops and robbers and gunfights and crazy driving and fast and furiousness,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you think in terms of little kids, you don\u2019t want to scare them, and I\u2019m not in favor of showing any kind of violence or aggression, but you can certainly have a big adventure even if you\u2019re 3.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Burgess said in her interview with The Times that the music that she danced to as a child also informed the creation of her show, which took children on musical adventures in addition to imaginary geographical ones. The five animal friends sang and danced to jazz, funk, bossa nova, Irish jig, township jive, tarantella and psychedelic soul.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI loved musicals, and my mother would put a record on and use that to get me and my brother to move the sweeper around,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can leap about and pretend to be Fred Astaire or Michael Jackson or whoever your musical idol of the moment is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The dances on \u201cThe Backyardigans\u201d were adapted from performances by five Alvin Ailey dancers, Ms. Johnson said.
