\u201cOppenheimer\u201d leads the pack with 13 nominations, followed by \u201cPoor Things,\u201d Yorgos Lanthimos\u2019s black comedy about the sexual awakening of a young Victorian woman, with 11, and the Martin Scorsese epic \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon,\u201d with 10. Greta Gerwig\u2019s \u201cBarbie,\u201d the highest-grossing film of 2023, picked up eight.<\/p>\n
In the acting races, Bradley Cooper (\u201cMaestro\u201d), Colman Domingo (\u201cRustin\u201d), Paul Giamatti (\u201cThe Holdovers\u201d), Cillian Murphy (\u201cOppenheimer\u201d) and Jeffrey Wright (\u201cAmerican Fiction\u201d) will square off for best actor. Annette Bening (\u201cNyad\u201d), Lily Gladstone (\u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d), Sandra H\u00fcller (\u201cAnatomy of a Fall\u201d), Carey Mulligan (\u201cMaestro\u201d) and Emma Stone (\u201cPoor Things\u201d) will duke it out for best actress.<\/p>\n
The toughest category to call is probably best actress, where the two front-runners are Gladstone<\/a>, who plays an Osage woman married to a white man involved in a murderous conspiracy in \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon,\u201d and Stone<\/a>, as a grown woman with the mind of a child in the \u201cFrankenstein\u201d-inspired \u201cPoor Things.\u201d<\/p>\n Gladstone won their most recent face-off at the Screen Actors Guild Awards \u2014 to Stone\u2019s apparent joy<\/a> \u2014 and has also taken home honors from the Golden Globes, the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle. But Stone came out on top at the BAFTAs and the Critics Choice Awards (and won her own Globe in the musical or comedy category).<\/p>\n The best actor race once looked to be tilting in favor of the gregarious Giamatti, who plays a solitary and cantankerous New England boarding-school teacher saddled with babysitting duty over Christmas break in \u201cThe Holdovers.\u201d But in recent weeks, Murphy, who plays the titular theoretical physicist in \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d has emerged as the likely winner.<\/p>\n Awards season thus far has been decidedly quiet when it comes to political speeches. (\u201cIt\u2019s too fraught,\u201d a studio executive told The New York Times\u2019s awards season columnist, Kyle Buchanan, last week<\/a>. \u201cPeople are worried about their careers.\u201d).
