Lauren Sanchez, the fianc\u00e9e of the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, was in front of him, shimmying away to Chic\u2019s \u201cI Want Your Love,\u201d in her reddish, partially see-through chiffon dress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Never mind that people had been tripping on her train all evening long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t mind,\u201d she said. \u201cIt just bounces right back up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/30-years-of-vanity-fair-oscar-party-photos#:~:text=Lazar's%20annual%20soir%C3%A9e%20had%20been,Oscar%20party%20together%20in%201994.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vanity Fair party<\/a> started in 1994 at Morton\u2019s, a celebrity hangout on the corner of Robertson and Melrose. The first few years, only the most famous and connected people in Hollywood were invited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the party and the magazine grew together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">First, the party expanded into the parking lot out back. Later, it moved to the Sunset Tower Hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But neither could contain what became the magazine\u2019s central branding event (and a brief move to a parking garage turned out to be a less-than-stellar choice for a party built for snobs).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the years, a host of stars began having their own after parties for Hollywood\u2019s biggest night, among them George Clooney, Jay-Z, Prince and Madonna.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A few figured out the exclusivity part. None achieved the size and scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kris Jenner, in a slinky beaded gown, ambled over to Ms. Sanchez to give her a kiss hello. Kim Kardashian joined them a moment later.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Seated by the window at a hightop table was the filmmaker John Waters, who had been at the party since around 3 p.m., when a small percentage of the event\u2019s regulars are invited to arrive for a dinner that takes place during the broadcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Less than 24 hours before, Mr. Waters had been in Ocean City, Md., where he hosted a screening and talk for his 1988 movie, \u201cHairspray.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI went home around midnight, lost an hour because of damn daylight savings, got picked up at 4:30, and went to the Philadelphia airport so I could come to this party,\u201d he said. \u201cHow\u2019s that for dedication?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Waters said that he had loved \u201cPoor Things,\u201d a kaleidoscopic movie about a Frankenstein-like surgeon who implants the brain of a baby into the body of a recently deceased woman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnytime an insane, sex art movie with a $35 million budget becomes an international box office hit, that\u2019s good for me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But that wasn\u2019t the real reason he was here. \u201cThe whole point is to prove you\u2019re invited,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A woman approached to tell him how much she loved his films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her name was Cathy Scorsese and she was there with her father, Martin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Turns out, Dad receives Mr. Waters\u2019s annual Christmas card, which last year was accompanied by a blow up doll of the sender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat was great,\u201d said Mr. Scorsese, who was now at her side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Seconds later, they were all taking pictures together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Upon completion, Sharon Stone bounded up to Mr. Scorsese and gawkers swarmed, eager to capture the director of \u201cCasino\u201d in a picture with the woman who starred in it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Naturally, they complied.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A few steps away was the television producer Shonda Rhimes, who had been at the dinner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI have to go take my Black excellence photo,\u201d she said, darting toward the front of the room with a group that included the actress Tracee Ellis Ross, the actor Jeffrey Wright, the musician Babyface and the filmmaker Ava DuVernay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Oscar winners arrived, trophies in hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One was the singer Billie Eilish, who along with her brother, Finneas O\u2019Connell, became the youngest two-time winner in Oscars history when she won the award for best original song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This time, they had won it with the song \u201cWhat Was I Made For?,\u201d from the movie \u201cBarbie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was cradling it as if it were a baby. Asked where she planned to put it when she got home, she replied, \u201cnext to the other one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Christopher Nolan, whose film \u201cOppenheimer\u201d was the evening\u2019s biggest winner, did a tour around the room holding his best director statue in one hand and his best picture Oscar in the other.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then, he darted toward the exits. Universal Studios was also holding a party for the cast and crew of \u201cOppenheimer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By then, it was after midnight and many were making their post-Vanity Fair plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cynthia Erivo, a previous Oscar winner who served as a presenter this year, was out on the deck barefoot. \u201cI think I\u2019m going to go home and change into something more comfy and go to Jay-Z\u2019s party,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The writer Jeremy O.
