{"id":24414,"date":"2024-03-18T02:04:12","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T06:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/monday-briefing-the-new-york-times-7\/18\/03\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-03-18T02:04:12","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T06:04:12","slug":"monday-briefing-the-new-york-times-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/monday-briefing-the-new-york-times-7\/18\/03\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Briefing &#8211; The New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-9ycfei eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2408903d\">Putin won a rubber-stamp election<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">President Vladimir Putin yesterday <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/17\/world\/europe\/russia-putin-election.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">extended his rule over Russia until 2030<\/a>, using a heavily stage-managed election with no real opposition to claim overwhelming public support for his domestic dominance and his invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Western governments condemned the election, and some Russians tried to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/17\/world\/europe\/russia-vote-noon-protests-navalny.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">turn the vote into a protest<\/a> by forming long lines at polling stations at noon. Ukraine sought to cast its own vote of sorts, firing a volley of exploding drones at Moscow and other targets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the Kremlin brushed those challenges aside and released results claiming that Putin had won 87 percent of the vote, an even higher number than in the four previous elections in which he ran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a news conference after the voting, Putin commented for the first time on the death of the imprisoned opposition leader <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/17\/world\/europe\/navalny-death-putin.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Aleksei Navalny<\/a>, calling it an \u201cunfortunate incident.\u201d (Navalny\u2019s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, waited in line for hours to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/17\/world\/europe\/yulia-navalnaya-election-protest.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">vote in Berlin<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The extent of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/17\/world\/europe\/russia-election-mood.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">public\u2019s true support for Putin<\/a> was hard to judge, with opposition candidates barred from running \u2014 the three other candidates on the ballot didn\u2019t criticize Mr. Putin \u2014 and the work of independent poll observers reduced to its lowest level since the days of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Putin is set to use his new six-year term to further cement his control of Russian politics and to press on with the war in Ukraine. If he finishes the term, he will become the longest-serving Russian leader since Catherine the Great in the 1700s.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7ad88g e1mu4ftr0\"\/><\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat\u2019s something that Israel, the Israeli public, does on its own,\u201d Netanyahu said in an interview on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re not a banana republic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The remarks by Schumer, the Senate majority leader, were part of a scathing speech he gave last week, during which the New York Democrat also accused Netanyahu of putting his political survival before the good of his country. The speech was indicative of the growing gap between Israel and the U.S. on the war in Gaza. President Biden praised the speech but stopped short of endorsing Schumer\u2019s call for a new election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Netanyahu, in remarks to his government, vowed that the Israeli military would invade Rafah, where more than a million Gazans have taken shelter.
