He was 34.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cola Boyy, who was born Matthew Urango, died Sunday at his home in Oxnard, his mother, Lisa Urango, said. No cause was given.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A self-described \u201cdisabled disco innovator,&#8221; Mr. Urango assembled diverse instruments to create a brimming mixture of funky rhythm and colorful sounds that accompanied his alluring voice, a striking balance of silk and chirp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Urango was born spina bifida, kyphosis and scoliosis and had used a prosthetic leg since he was 2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As Cola Boyy, he released a debut 2021 album, \u201cProsthetic Boombox,\u201d that garnered <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/6CZN3MHeeEXh5PxKZivIa8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">millions of streams on Spotify<\/a> and other platforms and boasted lively and introspective tunes such as \u201cDon\u2019t Forget Your Neighborhood,\u201d a collaboration with the indie pop group the Avalanches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He used his burgeoning platform as an artist to speak out for social causes, including those related to people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cNot a lot of artists are visibly disabled,\u201d he said in an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tmrwmagazine.com\/features\/culture\/this-is-our-culture-cola-boyy\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview with Tmrw magazine<\/a>. \u201cSociety wants us to stay inside and to be timid and docile, and to not feel confident, or cool, or sexy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As Cola Boyy, he performed for audiences at major music festivals, including Coachella in 2019, where he appeared on a lineup that included Ariana Grande and Bad Bunny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He was signed to the French indie label Record Makers and collaborated with Mac DeMarco, MGMT and others, according to his manager, Jack Sills.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Urango had been a community organizer who worked on issues in Oxnard\u2019s agricultural and immigrant communities, Mr. Sills said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Matthew Joseph Urango was born on Feb. 14, 1990, in Ventura County, his mother said. He grew up in Oxnard, a largely Latino and working-class city on the Southern California coast that is known for the vast farms nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Urango taught himself to play several instruments, his mother said. His first was a \u201clittle kid drum set,\u201d he said in an interview with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefader.com\/2018\/10\/25\/cola-boyy-oxnard-black-boogie-neon-interview\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Fader that was published in 2018<\/a>, adding that he had later picked up piano and guitar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday night, at an impromptu vigil in an Oxnard alleyway, scores of people turned out to mourn, his mother said. Flowers and candles amassed on the ground, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=10211199685783741&amp;set=a.2376237581123\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">words \u201cRIP COLA BOYY\u201d<\/a> spray-painted on a wall above.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Urango is survived by his twin brother, Marcus; his younger brother, Noah; and his mother and father, Lisa and Joseph Urango.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When he was a teenager, Mr. Urango joined Oxnard\u2019s thriving punk scene, playing in several bands, Mr. Sills said.
