A few years ago, Holker and Boss had begun working on a picture book, \u201cKeep Dancing Through.\u201d Featuring illustrated versions of them and their children, it reminded readers to \u201cgroove through the ups and downs.\u201d After Boss\u2019s death, its title \u2014 their family credo \u2014 became more poignant.<\/p>\n

Holker wasn\u2019t sure if she wanted to release the book. \u201cIt felt too hard,\u201d she said. \u201cBut this is also what Stephen and I believed when he was here, and it\u2019s what I still believe now \u2014 it\u2019s what we taught our kids and what I am still trying to teach my kids.\u201d \u201cKeep Dancing Through\u201d came out in January<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Not long after Holker began posting dance videos again, she was offered the \u201cSo You Think You Can Dance\u201d judging position. The call came as a surprise \u2014 at that point, the show hadn\u2019t been on TV for more than a year, with no guarantee of renewal \u2014 and provoked another wave of complicated feelings.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was this intense mixture of gratitude and fear,\u201d Holker said.<\/p>\n

The dancer, singer and actor JoJo Siwa<\/a> judged alongside Boss on the last season of \u201cSo You Think You Can Dance\u201d and returned to judge again this season. As a student, Siwa, now 20, would seek out Holker\u2019s classes at dance conventions, \u201cfollowing her around, just thinking she was the coolest human ever,\u201d she said in an interview. \u201cBut I wasn\u2019t sure what to expect going into \u2018So You Think You Can Dance.\u2019 Every corner of that set is a reminder of her history and of Twitch. It\u2019s a hard thing to imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Few people are better qualified than Holker to sit on the show\u2019s panel. She has been adjudicating dance competitions for nearly two decades, and her years working in various roles on \u201cSo You Think You Can Dance\u201d give her a deep understanding of the show\u2019s challenges and quirks.<\/p>\n

At its judging table, Holker is a cheerleader, but not a hollow one. She offers substantive, often technically pointed critiques, and champions dancers who cultivate an emotional connection to their choreography \u2014 unusual in the flash-focused world of reality-TV dance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
