That looks so hard and stressful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnd how do you get all of that glass off your skin?\u201d her friend and former colleague <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/08\/25\/arts\/television\/extended-interview-with-kristen-wiig.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kristen Wiig<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cListen,\u201d Rudolph said, \u201cglass seems tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This was on an afternoon in late March, and Wiig and Rudolph, who specialize in lighter, glass-free fare, were perched high over New York in the penthouse suite of a luxury hotel with a zillion-dollar view \u2014 rooftops, rivers, the Statue of Liberty in the distance. They were dressed in natural fabrics and neutrals, a far and elegant cry from the demented spandex and polyester they so often wore during their years on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc.com\/saturday-night-live\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSaturday Night Live.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Acquaintances since their early days in the comedy scene (they met at a bridal shower hosted by Melissa McCarthy), they were both members of the famed comedy troupe the Groundlings before they found their separate ways up the 30 Rock elevator to \u201cS.N.L.\u201d And they have wound in and out of each other\u2019s lives and careers ever since: as co-stars in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/13\/movies\/bridesmaids-with-kristen-wiig-maya-rudolph-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cBridesmaids\u201d<\/a> (Wiig was also a writer of the movie); <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IoTv5sjom8k\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">popping back into \u201cS.N.L.\u201d<\/a> together; <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yhIQV8o3nyg\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jointly presenting an Oscar<\/a>. Now they are both leading Apple TV+ shows, each a comedy of wealth and status.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/tv.apple.com\/us\/show\/palm-royale\/umc.cmc.6vwg3ce7ovsexa3a6r7f6qk49\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cPalm Royale,\u201d<\/a> which premiered on March 20, Wiig stars as Maxine, a frenzied social climber in 1960s Palm Beach. In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/tv.apple.com\/us\/show\/loot\/umc.cmc.5erbujil1mpazuerhr1udnk45\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLoot,\u201d<\/a> which returns for its second season on Wednesday, Rudolph plays Molly, a divorc\u00e9e with a multibillion dollar settlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During a brisk chat, they discussed laughter, likability and what \u201cBridesmaids\u201d taught the world. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">How did you each end up at \u201cS.N.L.\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">KRISTEN WIIG <\/strong>Both of us through the Groundlings at different times. I started at \u201cS.N.L.\u201d in 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">MAYA RUDOLPH <\/strong>I know, because that\u2019s when I had Pearl [Rudolph\u2019s first child]. I remember seeing you, and I was like, Who\u2019s that? My thought was, I want to go have fun with her! I said the words, \u201cI want to go back and play with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">During your \u201cS.N.L.\u201d years, were there particular kinds of characters that you gravitated toward?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH<\/strong> I always wanted to be the wife or the girlfriend, but I never was. I was the wacky neighbor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Maybe I\u2019m thinking of your impressions, but I remember you playing high-status types, the Beyonc\u00e9s, the Oprahs. And Kristen, I recall you playing a lot of lunatic outsiders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>Yeah. I don\u2019t know what that says about me, but it was fun to play the person you don\u2019t really want at the dinner party, the person you stare at.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">What made you decide to leave?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>I thought motherhood was me leaving, and then I couldn\u2019t leave. I would watch the show from home and my friends were on it, and I would be very upset. I felt like I died and was watching my life. I wasn\u2019t ready to leave when I left. I kind of left twice, I said goodbye, and I was like, Oh, I\u2019m back for one more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>I knew when it was time to leave. That place thrives on you not totally knowing your place. I always said the moment I feel totally comfortable, here\u2019s the moment I have to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Once you left, did you have any anxiety about what your career would look like after?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>It was less about what it was going to look like and more about, this was all I\u2019ve ever wanted. So now what? But I was always going to be an actor that did everything. I was surprised when people said, like, \u201cWow, I didn\u2019t know you wanted to do drama.\u201d I was like, Oh, you didn\u2019t know I was human and experienced human emotions?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>I wouldn\u2019t say I worried. That\u2019s not because there was any confidence there. I just went day by day. Because so much of your career, what you\u2019re asked to do, is out of your hands. So it was like, I can\u2019t freak out about this. I have no control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>Were you still at \u201cS.N.L.\u201d when we did \u201cBridesmaids\u201d?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>Yeah, that was my sixth year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Remember the discourse around that movie? Remember people seeming so surprised that women were funny?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>Wasn\u2019t that delightful?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>Some people even went so far as to say that it worked because we were women acting like men, but we weren\u2019t acting like men. Women swear, women get drunk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH<\/strong> Do you think we taught people that women can poop?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>I hope so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">So how did these Apple TV+ series happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>\u201cPalm Royale\u201d came to me initially through Laura Dern, who had been creating it for years. She said, \u201cDo you want to look at this thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">How do you refuse Laura Dern?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG and RUDOLPH<\/strong> (simultaneously) You don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, they\u2019d developed a show for me and Fred Armisen called <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/12\/arts\/television\/forever-amazon-maya-rudolph-fred-armisen-review.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cForever.\u201d<\/a> We really liked working together, but we only did that for one season. Then they came to me with this idea, a woman who just became divorced from a billionaire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Tell me about Molly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>I never knew what kind of lady she was before. She was probably a nice girl, maybe from the Bay Area. She met her husband in college and he developed this crazy business and became a billionaire, and she never really asked herself who she wanted to be and what kind of life she wanted. So she\u2019s just learning to answer those questions. But I like her. I try to make her out of touch in a fun way. Molly has to have a little heart. She needs to be nice to people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>Because the audience has to be on her side. And root for her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>I hate being a [expletive], character-wise. I just can\u2019t do it. Unless it\u2019s funny. Molly\u2019s always striving to do the right thing. I like that the show has a moral conscience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Maxine has neither wealth nor status.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>She doesn\u2019t, and she doesn\u2019t know who she is. Maxine is not from money. She has striven to be in high society since she was a kid. You can tell she\u2019s not an evil person, but her want is her main goal. We both play characters that on paper are like, No, thank you. But you need to have the audience like you. Otherwise they\u2019re not going to care about the show. That\u2019s something we both learned with even comedic stuff. It can be joke, joke, joke, but unless you care about the person, it\u2019s not going to be funny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>At \u201cS.N.L.,\u201d early on, I wrote a character based on my friend\u2019s really annoying girlfriend, and I just found it painful to do. I realized, Oh, I actually have to be invested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">How far can you go and still maintain that likability?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH<\/strong> It\u2019s hard. I have to go big. I always have to be reminded that there could be levels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>But you\u2019re so good at subtle, even sad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>Hey, thanks! I know that I have that in myself, but it\u2019s nice when people see those levels of emotion. Something small, something quiet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">These are ensemble-driven series, but how does it feel to be first on the call sheet?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>Honestly, that number is just a number. Because I\u2019m in a show with Carol Burnett.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH<\/strong> I have younger people in my cast. I forget that I\u2019m like the tribe elder. I feel like, Oh, honey, no, it\u2019s just me. It still surprises me that I\u2019ve been doing this for a while. I don\u2019t love that so many young people don\u2019t get pop culture references that are integral to my being. I find that strange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG<\/strong> Yeah, I made a \u201cThree\u2019s Company\u201d joke the other day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Are there more opportunities now for women over 35, beyond just playing the mom with the laundry basket?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH <\/strong>I don\u2019t know, because I never fell into that category. Nobody ever saw me as that. I mean, I have a laundry basket at home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>And you carry it so well. As far as roles, on paper there are more, because there are so many streamers. But the ratio is still off. I will always believe that there aren\u2019t enough roles for women who are older. I\u2019d like to say it\u2019s changing, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s where it should be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH<\/strong> Oh yeah, I don\u2019t believe it\u2019ll ever be where it should be. But I definitely don\u2019t feel stifled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Will you work together again?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">WIIG <\/strong>God, I hope so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">RUDOLPH<\/strong> It\u2019s such a luxury. It\u2019s the most fun. And it\u2019s the thing that you can\u2019t fabricate.
