Ecuadorean police officers entered the Mexican embassy in Quito on Friday night to arrest Ecuador\u2019s former vice president, who had taken refuge there after Mexico granted him political asylum, prompting Mexico to suspend bilateral relations.<\/p>\n
Jorge Glas, the former vice president, had been sentenced to prison and there was a warrant out for his arrest before Mexico granted him asylum, Ecuador\u2019s presidential office said in a statement<\/a> announcing the arrest.<\/p>\n The statement said that \u201cno criminal can be considered politically persecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n The statement, from the office of President Daniel Noboa, added that the arrest had gone forward because Mexico had abused the immunities and privileges granted to the diplomatic mission and that Mr. Glas\u2019s asylum was given \u201ccontrary to the conventional legal framework.\u201d<\/p>\n Shortly after the arrest, Mexico\u2019s president, Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, issued a statement<\/a> saying that the arrest was a \u201cflagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of Mexico,\u201d and that the Ecuadorean police had entered the embassy forcibly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Mexico\u2019s secretary of foreign affairs, Alicia B\u00e1rcena Ibarra, declared the breaking of diplomatic relations with Ecuador in a statement<\/a>, saying that Mexican diplomatic personnel had suffered injuries in the episode.<\/p>\n This is a developing story.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
