He was 45.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The cause was pulmonary thromboembolism, his brother, Kevin Benjamin, said. He did not say where in Maryland Mr. Benjamin died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Known for his willingness to experiment, his exuberant stage persona and his trademark swirl of locs, often streaked with teal or red,<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>Mr. Benjamin was a founding member of the pianist Robert Glasper\u2019s combo, which, the critic Nate Chinen wrote in The New York Times in 2012, \u201cspecializes in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/02\/24\/robert-glasper-experiment-so-is-it-jazz\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">deep, immersive grooves<\/a>, nourished as much by hip-hop and R&amp;B as any known species of jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBlack Radio,\u201d the band\u2019s fourth album on the venerable Blue Note label, featured guest appearances by the neo-soul singer Erykah Badu, the rappers Lupe Fiasco and Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) and others. It won the 2012 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/awards\/55th-annual-grammy-awards\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grammy Award<\/a> for best R&amp;B album and rose to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/robert-glasper\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 15<\/a> on the Billboard album chart. Mr. Benjamin shared <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HuGALst1BlI\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another Grammy<\/a> with the band in 2015 when \u201cJesus Children,\u201d a Stevie Wonder cover, won for best traditional R&amp;B performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Whether collaborating with Mr. Glasper or the critically acclaimed vibraphonist Stefon Harris in the band Blackout, Mr. Benjamin showed off his distinctive voice on his primary instrument, alto saxophone. In an obituary, the jazz bible DownBeat wrote that he \u201cpossessed a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/downbeat.com\/news\/detail\/saxophonist-sonic-explorer-casey-benjamin-dies-at-45\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fluid, round sound<\/a> on the alto saxophone and a unique sense of phrasing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But he never let himself be limited by genre, style or even instrument; he created a rainbow of sounds using not only reeds and woodwinds but also a vocal synthesizer manipulated with a keytar (a keyboard instrument worn with a strap around the neck), along with other synthesizers and effects pedals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cEverything is basically about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p0XQg042umk&amp;t=46s\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">textures<\/a>,\u201d he said in a 2012 video interview. \u201cMy love for synths, I try to translate it into everything I\u2019m doing. Even with a woodwind instrument, I try to emulate a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/08\/23\/arts\/music\/robert-moog-creator-of-music-synthesizer-dies-at-71.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Moog<\/a>, or some sort of keyboard or analog synthesizer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As Derrick Hodge, the bassist and composer who worked with Mr. Benjamin in both the Experiment and Blackout, put it in an interview, \u201cBefore Casey would ever play a note, you would see him, and something about his energy just exuded freedom \u2014 \u2018Hey, let\u2019s get into something that just speaks to us, that feels real.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Benjamin\u2019s many collaborations included appearances on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/16\/arts\/music\/a-tribe-called-quest.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cWe Got It From Here \u2026 Thank You 4 Your Service,\u201d<\/a> the 2016 comeback album by A Tribe Called Quest, and on Solange\u2019s chart-topping album <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/11\/arts\/music\/solange-bon-iver-billboard-chart.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cA Seat at the Table\u201d<\/a> that same year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Along with Mr. Glasper, Mr. Hodge and many others, Mr. Benjamin played on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/love-will-find-a-way-mw0003276142\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLove Will Find a Way\u201d<\/a> (2019), the first solo album in nearly two decades by the Earth, Wind &amp; Fire vocalist Philip Bailey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Earlier that decade he had toured with Patrick Stump, the lead singer of the band Fall Out Boy, in support of his 2011 solo album, \u201cSoul Punk.\u201d During a recent Fall Out Boy concert in Milwaukee, Mr. Stump paused to pay an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8BoTGKjpwHE\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emotional tribute<\/a> to Mr. Benjamin:<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t say this lightly. He was probably the most talented musician I\u2019ve ever met anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even when playing in support of other artists, Mr. Benjamin viewed himself less as a sideman than as a fellow musical voyager.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cNinety-nine percent of my career I\u2019ve been hired to be myself,\u201d he said in a 2018 interview with the website <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/highbreedmusic.com\/artist\/casey-benjamin\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HighBreedMusic<\/a>. \u201c\u2018I want Casey Benjamin; just let him do what he does.\u2019 Because I\u2019ve created this lane for myself, I created this sort of thing that only I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Casey Bryon Benjamin was born on Oct. 10, 1978, in Brooklyn, the youngest of three children of Gentle Benjamin, a television video producer from Grenada, and Julieta (McAlmon) Benjamin, a nurse assistant from Panama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Casey was already showing an interest in jazz by the time he was 4, and by 8 he was learning to play piano, with saxophone soon to follow. Growing up in South Jamaica, Queens, he was also surrounded by the sounds of the Caribbean that were percolating in his neighborhood. \u201cWith Caribbean and Latin culture, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wx0tu7vWfSo&amp;t=45s\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">party aspect<\/a> is always deeply ingrained in the music,\u201d he told HighBreedMusic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After graduating from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music &amp; Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan in 1996, he studied music at the New School for Social Research in Greenwich Village, where he met Mr. Glasper, setting in motion collaborations that would help define his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In recent years, he toured with his own band, with a solo album scheduled to be released later this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In addition to his parents and his brother, Mr. Benjamin is survived by his sisters, Nicole Benjamin and Cristina King, and his partner, Whitley Davis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Addressing the audience at the recent Fall Out Boy concert, Mr. Stump recalled his taciturn stage persona in the band\u2019s early years, and said that Mr. Benjamin had helped change that. \u201cHis authority for joy was pervasive,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd to be in his presence was to understand that music is supposed to be joy.
