Cole apologized on Sunday for releasing a diss track about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/27\/magazine\/kendrick-lamar-dave-free.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a>, saying he felt \u201cterrible\u201d and vowing to update the song or remove it from streaming services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The apology followed an exchange of verses that began in October, when <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/29\/arts\/music\/popcast-j-cole.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">J. Cole<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/24\/arts\/music\/drake-rap-influence.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Drake<\/a> ranked themselves, with Lamar, as the \u201cbig three\u201d in hip-hop in the song \u201cFirst Person Shooter.\u201d In March, Lamar dismissed that comparison in a guest verse on the song \u201cLike That\u201d by Future and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/28\/arts\/music\/metro-boomin-songs.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Metro Boomin<\/a>, rapping that there was no big three, \u201cit\u2019s just big me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In response, J. Cole on Friday released the diss track \u201c7 Minute Drill\u201d on his surprise new album, \u201cMight Delete Later.\u201d It includes the lines: \u201cI got a phone call, they say that somebody dissing \/ You want some attention, it come with extensions \/ He still doing shows but fell off like \u2018The Simpsons.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Two days after the song was released, J. Cole apologized for it while onstage at his Dreamville Festival in Raleigh, N.C., <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Glock_Topickz\/status\/1777176191117455868\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to videos<\/a> posted on social media. During his headlining performance, he said that when he saw the response to the song after it came out, it didn\u2019t \u201csit right with my spirit,\u201d and that he was speaking about it at the concert to end the beef.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He also called Lamar one of the \u201cgreatest\u201d to ever use a microphone and said he hoped Lamar would forgive him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe past two days felt terrible,\u201d J. Cole said. \u201cIt let me know how good I\u2019ve been sleeping for the past 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As of early afternoon on Monday, \u201c7 Minute Drill\u201d was still available on major streaming services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">J. Cole released \u201cMight Delete Later\u201d on his Dreamville Records label, an imprint of Interscope Records, which is owned by Universal Music Group. Universal did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lamar does not appear to have addressed the track or the apology publicly. Representatives for Lamar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Drake seemed to respond to Lamar\u2019s verse at a concert in Sunrise, Fla., in late March, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/music\/a\/tracewilliamcowen\/drake-diss-response\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Complex.<\/a> He told the crowd that people had been asking him how he was feeling and that he had his \u201chead up high,\u201d and felt as if no one could mess with him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lamar, Drake and J.
