The posts included a report from a newspaper in Chhattisgarh state that said the election commission had made the decision, but the paper&#8217;s editor told AFP the article was\u00a0<span>meant to be satirical<\/span>.<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;New guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India for Lok Sabha elections,&#8221;\u00a0read part of a <span>Hindi-language <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240409080006\/https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3Dpfbid02dN5FXZvUecMgDhaBMWaZ6AEATMENo74WgZs5Ctd4zSpQ4kty8MhZwtaz6rp2mFGJl%26id%3D100078038920209&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook post;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook post<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>shared on March 25, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Commission&#8217;s new instructions: voting will be done through ballot paper and not electronic voting machines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a billion Indians will vote to elect the 543-member Lok Sabha &#8212; the lower house of the country&#8217;s legislature &#8212; in a six-week-long general election that starts on April 19.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/old.eci.gov.in\/voter\/history-of-evm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Electronic voting machines;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Electronic voting machines<\/a> have been used in the polls &#8212; the largest democratic exercise in the world &#8212; since 2004 (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/2K7M-DG9S\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The post included a screenshot of <span>an article from the <a href=\"https:\/\/eveningtimescg.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Evening Times;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Evening Times<\/a> newspaper<\/span> that was published on March 24 with a <span>headline similar to the Facebook post:<\/span> &#8220;Commission&#8217;s new instructions: voting will be done through ballot paper and not electronic voting machines&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/9PEX-D4V7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The March 29 post reads: &#8220;A story was published in a local newspaper in #Chhattisgarh that #ECI has given directions for voting through ballot paper &amp; not #EVM in #LokSabhaElection2024<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The story is completely #Fake and baseless. No such directions have been given.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It includes a screenshot of the article shared in the false posts <span>stamped with &#8220;Fake News&#8221; in Hindi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An election commission official separately told AFP on April 3 that the report was &#8220;baseless&#8221; and it had not issued any such guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The official added &#8220;the newspaper that published the report later issued an apology&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Satirical article<\/h3>\n<p><span>Nathmal Sharma, editor of the Evening Times newspaper, told AFP that, &#8220;the article was a satirical piece published during the festival of Holi and had no basis in reality.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a <span>tradition in their area to publish satirical news during the festival&#8221;<\/span>, he said on April 2.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some readers perceived it as real news. <span>So<\/span>, the newspaper <span>published a clarification<\/span> in its next edition to address any confusion,&#8221; Sharma added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 656px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container voting&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Within the article, it says: &#8220;The news of voting using ballot papers published in the Holi issue was completely imaginary.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>AFP has
