For its second season, which ended in March, the cast was reconfigured to include mostly people from reality shows like \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/17\/style\/survivor-clothing.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Survivor<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/08\/arts\/television\/big-brother-season-25.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Big Brother<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/30\/style\/married-bachelor-couples.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Bachelor<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/09\/26\/arts\/television\/dancing-with-the-stars-is-turned-on-its-head.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dancing With the Stars<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/20\/style\/real-housewives-music.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Real Housewives<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/29\/style\/below-deck-bravo.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Below Deck<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/10\/arts\/television\/shahs-of-sunset-on-bravo-about-iranian-americans.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Shahs of Sunset<\/a>,\u201d \u201cBling Empire,\u201d \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/spotlight\/rupauls-drag-race\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race<\/a>\u201d and \u201cThe Challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the days after Season 2 premiered in January, \u201cThe Traitors\u201d became the most viewed unscripted series in the country on streaming platforms, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/streaming-tv-ratings-jan-15-21-2024-1235826543\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Nielsen statistics<\/a>. A third season <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/popculture\/-traitors-renewed-season-3-rcna137795\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was greenlit<\/a> in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As interest in \u201cThe Traitors\u201d has intensified, former reality stars \u2014 along with other people with some degree of celebrity \u2014 have been clamoring for a chance to appear on the show set at a Scottish castle, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/29\/style\/the-traitors-alan-cumming.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hosted by Alan Cumming<\/a> and offering a prize of up to $250,000. (The American version, like its British, Canadian, Greek and Australian counterparts, is a spinoff of a show originally produced in the Netherlands.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI would assume that a lot of people who have managers and agents are sending out the emails to \u2018Traitors\u2019 casting and production trying to get their foot in the door,\u201d said Jemmye Carroll, 35, who, after appearing on \u201cThe Real World: New Orleans\u201d in 2010, went on to join the casts of several seasons of \u201cThe Challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m using my one resource, which is Trishelle,\u201d she continued, referring to Trishelle Cannatella, a winner of \u201cThe Traitors\u201d Season 2 and another cast member of \u201cThe Real World\u201d and \u201cThe Challenge\u201d franchises. Both women live in New Orleans and when they have run into each other around town, Ms. Carroll said, she has encouraged Ms. Cannatella to put in a good word for her with the production staff of \u201cThe Traitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think she\u2019s the best resource because she\u2019s the reigning queen of the castle,\u201d Ms. Carroll said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rob Cesternino, who was on two seasons of \u201cSurvivor\u201d (\u201cThe Amazon\u201d in 2003 and \u201cAll-Stars\u201d in 2004), said the buzz surrounding \u201cThe Traitors\u201d has made the possibility of appearing on it alluring to many reality stars \u2014 himself included \u2014 whom he described as \u201cmoths to a flame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI would definitely go on \u2018The Traitors\u2019 if I was asked,\u201d said Mr. Cesternino, who lives outside Raleigh, N.C., and hosts a podcast that focuses on reality television, called \u201cRob Has a Podcast.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe first rule of being a reality TV star is keep doing more reality TV shows,\u201d Mr. Cesternino, 45, said. \u201c\u2018Traitors\u2019 opens up a whole avenue to reality stars,\u201d he continued, describing the show as bringing together \u201cthe multiverse of reality TV.\u201d Stars from that genre, he said, see it as a way to extend or revive their careers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat\u2019s a really big selling point,\u201d Mr. Cesternino said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/04\/style\/danny-roberts-real-world.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Danny Roberts<\/a>, 46, who appeared on \u201cThe Real World: New Orleans\u201d in 2000 and on its Paramount+ spinoff, \u201cThe Real World Homecoming: New Orleans,\u201d in 2022, has also recently been \u201chaving some strategic conversations\u201d about how to get cast on \u201cThe Traitors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Roberts, now a recruitment consultant in Grafton, Vt., compared getting a call from the show\u2019s producers to buying a winning lottery ticket, adding that he was interested not just in being on TV, but also in playing the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think it would also be a cool piece of escapism,\u201d Mr. Roberts said, \u201cwith a fascinating psychological component to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His \u201cReal World\u201d and \u201cReal World Homecoming\u201d co-star Melissa Beck, 47, said she would love to receive an offer to join the cast, too \u2014 not least because contestants, in addition to being eligible to win a six-figure cash prize, are also paid to appear on the show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt would revive your ability to get a check, the time commitment is fantastic, the prize pot is pretty cute, I bet the appearance fee is cool,\u201d Ms. Beck, who lives on Long Island, said. \u201cAnd it doesn\u2019t hurt that it has an Emmy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While many of the notable contestants on the American version of \u201cThe Traitors\u201d have appeared on reality TV, its casts have also included members who became famous for other reasons. Ryan Lochte, the gold medalist Olympic swimmer, appeared on Season 1, and Deontay Wilder, a professional boxer, was on Season 2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As the show\u2019s profile has risen, some famous fans from outside the world of reality TV, like the comedian <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/t-magazine\/100000008198044\/tell-t-a-joke-matt-rogers.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Matt Rogers<\/a>, have also made no secret of their aspirations to be noticed by producers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Rogers, on a 2023 episode of \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/19\/style\/las-culturistas-culture-awards.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Las Culturistas<\/a>,\u201d the pop-culture podcast he hosts with the \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d star Bowen Yang, said he would jokingly talk about wanting to be on \u201cSurvivor,\u201d but was genuinely interested in appearing on \u201cThe Traitors.\u201d \u201cI really want to be on,\u201d he said on the podcast. (Mr. Rogers, through a representative, declined to comment for this article.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mike Cotton, an executive producer of the show\u2019s American and British versions, said the American spinoff\u2019s success largely hinged on the curation of its casts, a process he described as having the precision and seriousness of a jury selection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Cotton declined to comment on specific details about casting the show\u2019s third season, including whether offers had been made, a timeline for such offers or how much cast members will be paid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But he said the general approach to casting was about finding a dynamic mix of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou want people from all walks of life that are going to bring their own unique skills to it,\u201d he said. \u201cYou want people who are big competitors, you want people who are cutthroat, you want people who are master manipulators, people who are deep thinkers, people who will sit back and watch and listen.
