Mandisa Hundley, a gospel singer whose strong vocals were applauded on \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d and who later won a Grammy Award for best contemporary Christian music album, was found dead at her home in Nashville on Thursday. She was 47.<\/p>\n
The Media Collective, which represented Ms. Hundley, confirmed the death and said in a statement that the cause was not known.<\/p>\n
Ms. Hundley, who performed and produced music with Christian themes, was a fan favorite on \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d in 2006 but became the fourth of the 12 finalists to be eliminated.<\/p>\n
She spoke openly about her love of God, and her music resonated with fans<\/a>.<\/p>\n Ms. Hundley famously stood up to Simon Cowell, the \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d judge, who has a reputation for being intimidating. In her video interview for the show, she referred to her audition in Chicago, when Mr. Cowell, in an apparent joke about her weight, said after she left the room, \u201cDo we have a bigger stage this year?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Ms. Hundley said in the video that despite the remark, she would still travel to Hollywood and face Mr. Cowell in the final judging.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I got to Hollywood, I knew I had to put my game face on,\u201d she said. \u201cI knew that I would finally get to speak my piece.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou hurt me, and I cried,\u201d she later told Mr. Cowell. \u201cBut I want you to know that I have forgiven you.\u201d Mr. Cowell replied that he was \u201chumbled,\u201d and the two hugged.<\/p>\n Ms. Hundley told The Oklahoman in 2006<\/a> that her faith helped her overcome Mr. Cowell\u2019s hurtful remark.<\/p>\n \u201cFood has always been a problem for me,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen Simon first made the comments, it was a nightmare. But God turned it around. Those words became the impetus I needed to kick-start my plan to live a more healthful lifestyle and get my eating under control.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n She went on to record several albums, beginning with \u201cTrue Beauty,\u201d released in 2007. Her Grammy-winning 2013 album, \u201cOvercomer,\u201d debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. It was her first Grammy after three previous nominations.<\/p>\n Mandisa Lynn Hundley was born in Sacramento on Oct. 2, 1976, to John Hundley and Ruby Berryman. Her mother worked for the state. She sang at church and studied vocal performance at American River College, a community college in Sacramento, before continuing her studies at Fisk University in Nashville.<\/p>\n After college, she was a backup vocalist for Trisha Yearwood and Shania Twain.<\/p>\n She is survived by her parents and a brother, John Hundley.<\/p>\n On her 2017 album, \u201cOut of the Dark,\u201d she addressed her struggles with depression, which she also wrote about in a memoir of the same name, published in 2022.<\/p>\n
